Reviews by Randy Montgomery
Scow II (R) Grade: B-
Starring: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Donnie Wahlberg,
Erik Knudsen, Franky G
By the time you pick up this issue, Halloween, 2005 will be in the books, but "Saw II" will still be playing on I
| multiple screens at your local theater. I passed on the press screening for the sequel and missed the
opportunity to get in an early review. Although I have eagerly awaited the film, in order to get the full effect,
j wanted to see the movie on Halloween weekend. My anticipation turned to disappointment. I looked back on |
my review of the original "Saw," in which I stated the following, "Be prepared to be freaked! If you scare easily,
inen "Saw'ls going to be like riding a roller coaster blindfolded with your hands in the air! I love horror flicks,
J and this one even spooked me!" (Wow, is that great writing or what?!)
As I read the review, I remembered the unique sequences in the original which made it stand out from others I
I in its genre. There were genuine thrills and chills in "Saw," but, as so often happens with sequels, this film fails |
| to live up to its namesake.
The Jigsaw killer is back, and is playing his mind games on an entire group of people this time. He leaves I
ineir safety up to a detective (Donnie Wahlberg) who must unravel the mystery (and save his own son) from |
] the sadistic game Jigsaw has created.
"Saw II" was entertaining to watch, but not nearly as scary or creative as its predecessor. There are periods I
I where the pacing is off. Instead of needless banter between Jigsaw and Detective Mason, we could have used a
I few more of those intriguing, twisted, gory games from the first "Saw."
"Saw II" is now playing in theaters nationwide.
The Legend of Zorro (PG) Grade: D+
Starring: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones,
Rufus Sewell, Nick Chinlund, Julio Oscar Mechoso
No matter how good a film "The Legend of Zorro" could have been, two hours and ten minutes is just j
I unnecessary. As bad as this movie is, two hours and ten minutes was almost unbearable. In fact,
thought about dumping my popcorn on the floor, just so I could go to the snack bar for a refill. I decided I
| couldn't do that to the clean up crew, however, so I endured.
"Legend" is a follow up to 1998's "Mask of Zorro" (which, for some reason, I never saw). The story takes I
I place years after the events of the first. Zorro (Antonio Banderas) is forced to fight off an evil villain who
threatens the progress of California entering into statehood in 1850. Here's a bit of history for you. President i
| Fillmore was in office at the time and signed the bill allowing California into the union. In the "Legend of Zorro,
| Abraham Lincoln is shown attending the festivities and welcoming the Golden State into the union. Also, about 1
1 halfway through the movie, there's a map showing state boundaries. I swear the map shows Arizona next to
California. Wasn't Arizona officially admitted almost 65 years later? I'm thinking those boundaries would not
* save appeared on a map at that time. So now I have to rent the DVD when it comes out (soon), fast forward to |
, that scene and see the map again. Considering the historical inaccuracies, such a mistake would not surprise |
I me.
The acting is horrible and the sets look like they came from an amusement park. Filmmaking is a form of art.
II hate to pick apart another man's artistic vision, but this was just bad!
"The Legend of Zorro" is now playing in theaters nationwide.
( NOW ON DVD )
The Perfect Man (PG) Grade: C-
Starring: Hilary Duff, Heather Locklear,
Aria Wallace, Chris Noth, Caroline Rhea
I hate to say I didn't enjoy a movie like "The Perfect Man," because it is so happy, there is little not to like. But |
then, maybe that's the problem. If the whole world were a Hilary Duff movie, we'd all be so much better off.
* Nothing bad ever happens in a Hilary Duff movie. OK, it does sometimes. But, the bad stuff always happens at j
„ the beginning. Everything always turns out "A-OK." When we see Hilary pout, cross her arms, and peer out a
window, we know the worst is over, and only good things remain. That is consistently the turning point in any |
J Hilary Duff film. True to form, it happens in "The Perfect Man."
Duff plays a teenager whose depressed mom packs up her and her younger sister and moves every time she I
I breaks up with a boyfriend. The mother (Heather Locklear) is a pastry chef who works in a bakery. The apple |
i fritter doesn't fall far from the tree, it seems, and soon Duff starts the same behavior.
When a failed romance lands the family in New York, Duff decides she isn't going to take it anymore and j
I launches a scheme to keep mom planted. She "fakes" the perfect man for her mom, by writing phony e-mails,
J sending flowers and having friends make prank phone calls. Hilary's perfect man is based on her best friend's |
uncle (Chris Noth), but no one makes the connection that he may REALLY be the one for Mom.
See "The Perfect Man" when you are fed up with the reality of every day life. Don't expect much and you
j won't be disappointed.
"The Perfect Man" is now available on DVD from Universal Pictures and contains outtakes and deleted
scenes.
