Small Spaces, Big Uses
With a little creativity, even the tiniest of spaces can function
effectively as a home office or workout area.

By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
Are you dreaming of a quiet home office or a
private space to workout at home, but faced
with a small house with limited room? There
are many ways to squeeze more space out of
your house, without adding on. Take a close
look at your home's interior. There is probably
space in each room that is not being used to its
full potential. A dark unused corner can
transform into an exercise haven, or a wide
awkward hallway may be the perfect size to
place a computer station. Closets, whether
walk-in or merely a small coat closet, can be
the perfect nook for exercise equipment or a
home office. Other often overlooked spaces
are the garage or attic, which can usually be
converted into almost any type of room with
less expense than adding onto a home.
Once you've located a potential spot in your
home to redo, it will probably be necessary to
clean unused items out of the room. Clean
everything you can out of the chosen space.
Maybe you haven't cleaned in years, so don't
hold back. Make the decision to let go of things
you had forgotten you owned. Thoroughly
cleaning the room, will immediately give you
more space and will make your redecorating
much easier.
Decorating
Adding a home office or gym to a room in
your home does not have to mean the room is
unattractive or mismatched. If your former den
is now housing your office, or a guest bedroom
is doubling as a home gym, you may want an
entirely new look for the entire room to make it
feel less hodge podge. Follow these
remodeling tips to maximize your space.
• The best way to make the most of a
small room is to plan and build ample,
space-saving storage. Wall
bookshelves, built in cabinets, and
corner display shelves, help make the
most of wall space by freeing up the
remaining floor and wall space.
• Baskets, wooden trunks, or upholstered
benches that feature storage cubbies
are creative, yet pretty choices. Do not
overlook the great storage potential
under couches or beds.
• In some small rooms dark paint on the
walls can actually make the walls
recede and appear farther away, giving
the illusion that the room is bigger than
it actually is.
• Stay away from heavy furniture for a
small room. Wicker and bamboo are
popular choices for small rooms, as well
as white washed wood or pine stained
wood.
• A folding screen provides privacy,
doesn't consume much floor space, and
can hide exercise equipment or a messy
desk.
• Place a mirror on a wall perpendicular to
a window. The reflection will greatly
expand the sense of space in your
room.
• Many decorators recommend that you
use the same floor covering throughout
a small room. Borders and area rugs
break up the room and visually shrink
the space.
Officing At Home
Basic furniture, such as a chair and desk,
are necessities for your office from the start;
however, it is much more important that you
equip your office with a computer, phone and
other business related features before you buy
glamorous, matching office furniture. Having a
well-organized and functional home office
doesn't mean that you have to spend a fortune.
For a moneysaving tactic that can apply to
everything from computers to decorative end-
tables, consider buying used items and
refurbishing them yourself.
Since space in a home office is usually
somewhat constrained, everything from what
you put on the walls, to how you do your filing,
will impact your work. Limit what you put on the
floor of your office. Stacks of paper, file boxes,
and unused equipment should be stored away,
so that you can easily move around your office
and locate things quickly. Additionally, you will
waste time and energy if you have to
constantly move one thing in order to get to
another. Whether you buy a custom made filing
system, or you use cardboard boxes, it is
important to develop a system for filing, and
then to keep up with it.
Exercising At Home
Exercising at home has many benefits; no
drive to the gym or lines for the equipment and
no fitness center fees. When considering
building a home gym there are a number of
factors to consider. After all, you don't want to
find yourself selling your fitness equipment at
your next garage sale.
Investing in home-exercise equipment can
initially be expensive, so your first goal should
be to develop a budget. Knowing how much
you have to spend will help narrow down your
choices. It is also important to consider space
limitations. Buying large equipment that won't
fit in your newly found small space won't do
anything to help you get fit. Unless you already
know what type of equipment you want, talk
with a fitness expert or knowledgeable sales
person to help you find machines that will
combine both cardiovascular and strength
training.
If your budget is small, and you can only
afford a few exercise things, supplement your
home gym with a jump rope for cardiovascular
exercise, some inexpensive resistance bands
for strength training and an exercise mat for
stretching. Other fairly inexpensive items
include vinyl covered metal dumbbells and a
padded weight bench, a step for aerobics and
workout videos. Today's fitness videos and
DVD's offer everything from kick boxing to tae
bo.
Fitness clubs offer a variety of equipment,
entertainment and people, which a home-gym
does not. To keep from getting bored with your
home workout, you'll have to be creative. Add
new equipment over time, and try different
workout videos and books. If you can stick with
it, you'll enjoy the benefits of working out
whenever you want, and in your pajamas, if
you choose.
