PIXAR
COMING TO DALLAS
march 30-april 3!
Toy Story 3, the smash-hit box-office sensation,
is so hot it's cool as everyone's favorite toys
take to the ice in Disney On Ice presents
Disney • Pixar's Toy Story 3! Playing at
American Airlines Center, this brand-new ice
spectacular visits Dallas/Fort Worth from March
30 to April 3 for 10 performances, including an
all-Spanish performonce on Saturday, April 2,
7:30 p.m.
Inspired by the No. 1 animated movie of all
time, families everywhere are invited to the
ultimate Toy Story experience with Woody, the
pull-string cowboy; space ranger Buzz Ligntyear;
Jessie, the yodsling cowgirl; and the rest of the
gang in a fast-paced, witty tale, live on ice.
Produced by Feld Enterfainment, Disney On Ice
presents Disney* Pixar's Toy Story 3 is the
exciting combination of al hree Toy Story
properties in one never-before-seen action
adventure.
"This show is truly revolutionary in its use of
projection technology and special effects to
bring an animated film to life," says Producer
Nicole Feld. "We use the entire ice surface as a
giant projection screen, allowing us to create
imaginative visual effects and put a unique twist
on a classic story. The result is a live, interactive
theater experience unlike anything audiences
have ever seen."
"We've all grown up watching ths Toy Story
movies,! says Producer Kenneth Feld "Now our
families - grandparents, parents and kids alike
- can re-live those incredible memories
together."

Story 3 opens as a teenage Andy is preparing
including placing his beloved toys into the toy
box. Anay must decide what to do with the
friends that have meant so much to him now that
he is too old to play with them.
"For us, the most difficult thing was trying to
figure out how to capture the magic of the movie
in an ice show," says Creative Director and
Writer Jerry Bilik. 'We decided that it would be
nice to go back and capture some of the best
moments from both Toy Story and Toy Story 2.
By adding that history, the show became more
meaningful because we gave the story more
continuity," says Biiik.

music to qive
classic characters a contemporary feel. Wrien
deciding how the green army men would move
and interact with one another, Choreographer
Cindy Stuart chose a drill number the
showcases synchronized skating and highlights
the ability or these skaters to move with military
precision.
Additionally, Stuart used the plethora of high-

rgy, hip music that is showcased throughout
snow as inspiration when creating eye-
catching choreography. "One of my favorite
scenes to choreograph woe 'Woody's
Roundup,'" says Stuart. "There's so much
energy and varying levels of music during that
production number. We begin with the song
Woody's Round-up' from the movie, then
transition to 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'
and finally into 'Hoedown Throwdown,' which is
like a dance party on the ice."
In the world of toys, it's the overall look that is
most important in creating each one's unique
identity, and the costumes in the show are
distinctive because so many of the surfaces have
to appear wooden, plastic or metal. To create
the plastic look of the green army men, Costume
Designer Scott Lane chose ths same fabric that's
used in creating football uniforms. "It's not
really a spandex, it's not quite polyester, but it's
got a thick weight to it and a nice sheen over the
whole thing. When the light shines on it, it looks
plastic," says Lane. In addition Lane relied
heavily on hand-painted fabrics, custom-dyed
materials and screen printing to create colorful,
vibrant patterns and fun textures that would
appear toy-like in the arena. A polka-dot that
would typically be the size of a nickel had to be
enlarged to the size of a quarter so that it
appears on the correct oversized scale.
When the toys arrive at Surrnyside Daycare in
the opening or Act 2, the audience gets a front
row seat as Barbie first lays eyes on groovy
bachelor Ken, and the set is transformed into
thei- own private 1970's-inspired dance floor.
As 'Dreamweaver' plays in the background,
moving projections create the illusion of
hundreds of glittering disco-ball mirrors, setting
the stage for their first romantic pair skate.
When the Barbie and Ken dream sequence
ends, Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear escorts the toys from
the daycare's Butterfly room to their new home
in the Caterpillar room. The toys are so excited,
urging time to go faster so that they can once
again be played with However, when the
recess bells rings, the lighting grows dark and
the toys discover they've been had, as they
come face to face with oversized, rambunctious
toddlers, in order for the toys to appear so
much smaller than the children, Scenic Designer
Joe Stewart created toddlers out of aircraft-
grade aluminum that together measure over 60
feet wide, 13 feet tall and weigh half a ton.
