THREE ICONS. ONE PLACE. THIS SUMMER.
1he Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
hosts three extraordinary exhibitions
this summer.
View paintings by some of Latin
America's best-known artists—Frida
Kahlo, Wifredo Lam, and Diego Rivera
along with the work of landmark artists
new to U.S audiences, in the exhibition
Modern and Contemporary Masterworks
from Malba - Fundacion Costantini.
This eye-opening exhibition brings to
North America works by many key avant-
garde Latin American artists who
pioneered modern art in their own
countries or participated in the principle
European movements. Visitors are invited
to discover and explore masterworks by
Argentina's Antonio Berni and Xul Solar;
Brazilian artists Tarsila do Amaral and
Candido Portinari; Chile's Roberto
Matta; Mexico's Miguel Covarrubias;
and Uruguay's Joaquin Torres-Garcia,
among others.
Catch a glimpse of some of England's
greatest art treasures in Rembrandt, Van
Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of
Kenwood House, London. The exhibition
showcases 48 masterpieces from the
collection known as the Iveagh Bequest.
Donated by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st
Earl of Iveagh and heir to the world's
most successful brewery, the collection
was shaped by the tastes of the Belle
Epoque—Europe's equivalent to
America's Gilded Age. Acquired mainly
from 1887 to 1891, the earl's purchases
reveal a taste for the portraiture,
landscape, and 17th-century Dutch and
Flemish works typically found in English
aristocratic collections. These
magnificent paintings reside at Kenwood
House, a neoclassical villa in London,
and they make their U.S. debut at the
MFAH.
Explore Japan through centuries of
masterworks from a celebrated private
collection. The last exceptional collection
of Japanese art in private hands, the
Kimiko and John Powers Collection is
renowned for its extraordinary scale and
quality. The MFAH presents more than
80 selections from their holdings
in Unrivalled Splendor: The Kimiko and
John Powers Collection of Japanese Art.
The exhibition showcases some of the
earliest known examples of Buddhist art
in Japan; narrative scroll paintings;
beautiful examples of calligraphy;
screens embellished with gold and silver;
sketches; sculptures; and objects of
lacquer, pearl, and silver. These diverse
and important objects tell the fascinating
story of Japan's artistic development and
its enduring cultural heritage.
