Mayor's Youth Counc -Counc Member District F-Fernando Ramirez
M, J, Khan and Fernando Ramirez are two very different people but have one thing in common. They
both hold an office to represent District F in Houston, TX, M.J Khan has been a representative of the
Houston City Council since December 2003. Fernando Ramirez has been a representative of the
Mayor's City Youth Council for the past 5 months. Both have a history of volunteering in their
community and both care immensely about their district.
M.J, Khan attended the University of Illinois. He earned a Masters degree in civil engineering and a
MBA at Rice University. He has been married for 29 years to Dr. Attiya Khan, renowned Cardiologist and
first female cardiology fellow at the Texas Heart Institute. Mr. Khan has a long history of community
service. He served as President of The Islamic Society of Greater Houston and President of the Pakistan
American Association of Greater Houston. He also served on the Small Business Advisory Board of the
Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. He has
been honored by several organizations such as the Black
Heritage Society and Americans by Choice Awards.
During his term, M. J. Khan pledged to be a full time council
member. He believes strongly in traditional values of
government efficiency, fiscal responsibility, and improving the
quality of life in District F.
District F, in my opinion, is the "melting pot" of Houston.
This district is located in Southwest Houston including parts
of Gulfton, Shenandoah, Sharpstown, Westwood and Alief. It
is the most geographically consolidated and most ethnically
diverse district in the City of Houston. District F is comprised
of 44% Hispanics, 22% Blacks, 17% Whites and 15% Asians.
It is a great place for business, transportation, healthcare, and
housing. M.J Khan works with many community groups to
make these and other areas of the district better.
My name is Fernando Ramirez. I represent District F on the 2008-09 Mayor's Youth Council. I am 18
years old and a senior at Alief Kerr High School. My responsibility as a member of the council is to
tackle the same issues Khan does along with the other members of the youth council. We help the city
of Houston by volunteering and holding meetings to discuss issues that affect our city today. I also talk
with the youth of my district to identify issues and concerns they have about Houston. To be honest, I
don't really find anything challenging with my role because I enjoy what I do. At times, it is difficult to
be at every volunteer event and meeting, but in the end, you face it and come to discover how
wonderful it is to serve your city. Call me unoriginal for saying that, but it's true. You never realize how
great it is to be a part of something until your time is done. I have only been in this council for 5
months, but my term with the other members and staff has been one to remember. What I enjoy most
is the volunteering. You get to help different organizations in the city and have the satisfaction of
knowing you just made their job a bit easier by doing something unselfish. District F is in the hands of a
great council member, and I have the privilege to say this, I have shadowed along side Mr, Khan and
can proudly say that he is a man of his word. It will be tough, but he is the right guy for District F and
he will make his promises come to fruition. He is a perfect example of what this city needs, a true
leader,
