the Rice (Thresher
New writing program
will lead to
stronger students
The implementation of the new writing center
in the fall of 2012 should help improve more than
just writing on campus. First of all, it will hopefully
help eliminate the age-old stigma on campus that
taking a COMM class means you cannot write. With
the requirement that everyone on campus has to
take a writing seminar in his or her freshman year,
we believe that the university will have leveled the
playing field.
Though many engineers have objected to the new
requirement, the fact that the seminar will count for
distribution credit is a decision that makes it reason-
able for students from all majors to be able to take this
class. Furthermore, each department may choose to al-
low specific seminars to count for major requirements,
which will help alleviate other worries that the class
will take up too much time.
Additionally, since students from many differ-
ent majors may be put together in the same classes,
people from diverse majors will have the chance
to get to know each other. Since the entire cam-
pus will eventually have taken a freshman semi-
nar, we hope the campus cultural divide between
engineering and humanities majors is on its way to
being bridged.
Since students will have to take the class in their
freshman year, they will be able to use what they learn
for the rest of their time at Rice. Writing education
in high school is often not standardized, so students
come into Rice with varying degrees of writing ability.
Writing is important for all majors and career paths,
so an ability to write well can only help Rice students
in the future.
With the new Center for Written, Oral and Visual
Communication, which will be located on the second
floor of Fondren, the importance of writing will be fur-
ther solidified on campus. The accesibilty of the area
for the center should make it convenient for students
who need communication help. We are happy the uni-
versity has decided to fund this project and to give it
the prominence that it deserves.
A salute to Baseball
Coach Wayne Graham
on his achievement
Congratulations to baseball coach Wayne Graham
for getting inducted into the Collegiate Baseball Hall
of Fame. He has been at Rice for the past 20 years, has
amassed 900 wins in his career and got the Owls their
only national championship in 2003. He has affected
the lives of numerous athletes and has been a pleasure
to have as part of the Rice community. Congrats to him
as he keeps on trekking, trying to lead the Owls to their
18th straight postseason berth and their second ever
national championship.
A standing ovation for
Owl Sasha Cooke on
her Grammy win
We would like to congratulate Sasha Cooke on win-
ning a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for her
performance as a cast member in the Metropolitan Op-
era premiere of Dr. Atomic.
Cooke received a degree in vocal performance from
Rice in 2004. She said she felt very encouraged during
her time at Rice and thanked her professors for their
help and support. As she claimed that she had not re-
ceived such support since her time at Rice, we would
like to also congratulate the university on the encour-
agement it provides to students.
They warned we the wQ fW would this year, but | experted it +0 go out with

In response to "TCU drug scandal
inflated" (Feb. 24, 2012):
Total denial and supreme mini-
malism. Your article is completely
naked. All student-athletes know
they are signing up to represent
an institution. Every institution
knows that if it recruits student-
athletes who don't have the char-
acter to stay clean and sober in
college, the institution will suf-
fer greatly. Hey, the last time 1
checked, there weren't too many
Christian dogmas that included
drug use/dealing beyond a little
wine at communion. The only thing
that can redeem TCU after this is
the most transparent overhaul of
recruiting standards and monitor-
ing standards for every athletic
team on campus for years to come.
The energy this will absorb out
of the athletic program will and
should be exhaustive. This is not
just an issue where football players
were caught being normal. Are you
nuts?
