HELP HALT THE FIEE MENACE
DURING the past we?k, San An' mio has had two serious fires
involving Xegrroes. one claiming the life of *11 aged man,
the other gutting a house and almr«t snuffing out the life of
h baby a few months old. In November, a woman was burned
to death when flames swept her home.
One of the fires, this week, was caused by an exploding, or
overturned, kerosene lamp or stove, the other by defective
electrical wirinsf.
Tli^e tragedies of horrible death, propertj losses and dam-
ages, and the anguish of survivors poignantly remind us of
warning and advice issued during the holiday season by San
Antonio's Fire Chief C. A. Hart, especially for that season,
but advice applicable the year around.
The chief pointed out that, increasing fire waste is a severe
drain upon the nation's resmirees and. in many caees. a serious
hindrance to the war effort. ' Home fires," he said, "are
Mazing more fiercely than in normal tim-s, first, because
most people are too busy with war activities to think about
and practice essential precautions, and, second, because equip-
ment is wearing out and becoming more hazardous. Repairs
or replacements are difficult to obtain."
Chief Hart issued a number of suggestions, that are well
worth repeating.
1. Keep cellars and 8' c* clear of papers and other com-
bustibles.
2. Avoid apontaneoii p : >n fires by prompt disposal of
faint and oil rags.
Be carnful with matches anu king materials—keep aih
trays handy.
4. Never clean with gasoline, benzine or naptha.
5 Replace frayed wires on electrical appliances and lamps.
Avoid overloading circuits and don't make improper substitu-
tions when fuses bum out.
♦>. Check stoves, furnaces, smoke pipes and chimneys. Clean
out sc.t. Make all necessary repairs and replacements.
7. Use a metail container for hot ashes. Call in a furnace
jiiau if you don't get enough heat, as something may be out
of or<i"r.
Th^e are simple, easy-to-folliw suggestion*. H all of us
follow them, we will go a long way toward halting the fire
menace.

another giant enemy—infantile paralysis.
The combined power of dimes, contributed each year by the
American people to the March of Dimes, in celebration of
the president'« birthday, makes it possible for every infantile
paralysis victim, regardless of age, race, creed, or color, to
receive the best medical fere available All over the country,
in areas invaded by infantile paralysis last summer, this
money was on hand 10 provide earlv medical care which may
w^an the difference between a life of crippling or normal
recovery.
Thete little dimes are now bearing interest far beyond
financial calculation. Remember this, and contribute to the
1045 March of Dimes, .January 14-31.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION
WHAT is it we need most in life—.training or education t
We must have both training and education. The worda
are not synonymous. Nor is one alone enough. Wherever
training has been substituted for education, as in Nazi Ger-
many and Japan, the world hag been given robot men as deadly;
as the robot botubs, aud as bent on
destruction.
Education weans "to lead out"
It Involves a widening of vision
and a deepening of thought. It Is
creative aud constructive. You can
train an animal, but you can edu-
cate enly a man.
Training has its uses In making
customs become automatic habits,
Just as the Nazis and Japanese
train for cruelty, so we can and
have trained our citizens to ob-
serve the rights aud well being of
others. Of course, thore are oxcep-
tlona, hut they stand out because
they are exceptions to the rule.
The conquered nations of Kurope,
the enslaved peoplos of the East
could tell us what the opposite is
like.
Our homes should be the training
ground for good manners and
cleanliness, for right living aud
right thinking. We can train our-
selves In all the qualities we most
admire In others. We can make a
liahit of being punctual, courteous
aud considerate. We can train our-
selves into the habits of perse-
verance aud concentration.
On the basis of such training,
we are ready for education. Edu-
cation Is not merely book learning.
It Is understanding. It Is the use
of the trained mind to learn, from
lieople and circumstances as well
as books. It is tho speulug of new
doors of thought, through which
npiH'ar the vistas ct our deepest
ideals, our truest dreams. It re-
quires steadfastness, perseverance,
concentration to become educated.
But those who are truly educated
find new pathways opening out be-
fore them, new ways in which they
mny progress to a better way of life.
The uutrained are the first to
be laid off. The uneducated never
rise above themselves.
We need both training and edo-
catlon. Only ns all our oltlsena
have both and utilize both In their
highest sense, can we progress as
a people aud, as a nation, can we
prova that democracy where all
men are free to learn, is the way
out from the moraas of ignorance
which stifles ss It enslaves.
