Muriel Rahn Captivates Large,
Appreciative San Antonio Audience
By S. CELESTE ALLEN
rvlSPLAYINQ a graciousuess that went as far 'oward captivat-
" ing her audience as did her definitely fine performance,
Muriel Rahn, talented star of Billy Rose's "Carmen Jones,"
thrilled a capacity audience at her concert appearance at Li-
brary auditorium Sunday afternoon, January 27,
Presenting a varied program including heavier opera num-
bers, light arias and folk song, the artist proved her right to
the acclaim she has received in ap-
pearances both In this country and
abroad.
Although aot • spectacular per-
former, her voice is a pleasing oue
aud her affable personality appeuws
for what lack of greatness critics
might bring forth.
Possibly her l>e8t received por-
trayals were those of "Leave Me
To Languish," from "Rlnnldo," by
Handel, and "Sucldio," from "La
Gloeonda," by Ponchlelli.
She scored heavily with her ren-
dition of the favorite "Ave Maria,"
but gained her greatest rounds of
applause with the gay "Carnival,"
the lilting "Wohin," and the Negro
folk tale "Little Boy, How Old Are
You?"
Equally noteworthy for their part
in making the program a success
was her rendition of "My Man's
Gone Now," from "Porgy and Hess,"
by (Jeorge Gershwin, and "Dat's
Love." (Habanero) from "Carmen
Jones."
As a special request she sang the
beautiful "Summertime" and as en-
cores choose "If My Dog was
Green." and "Let My Song in Your
Heart." She was ably assisted by
the fine accompaniment of Daniel
