Wheatley sweet memories re-lived this weekend
It's been twenty-two years since
San Antonio's premiere Black high
school, Wheatley shut its
doors forever. The old
white brick building
which graduated some of
San Antonio's and
America's most
productive c.itizens, the 1
perennial leader and
champion in sports, and
the unifying force for San
Antonio's Black
community for 36 years
was closed in 1970. For a
short time, the Wheatley
name was carried over to
Brackenridge High
School, but the spirit just
wasn't there, so the
middle school which
replaced the legendary
high school was renamed
Wheatley.
This weekend, as they
do every two years, all
the classes of Wheatley «
High School will get
together to celebnate their
All Classes Reunion.
From this Friday until
they say good-byes next Monday,
classmates from 1934-1970 will
share memories and swap stories of
the good times they had while
attending Wheatley. Among those
celebrating will be residents of nearly
every state in the Union, publishers,
doctors, nurses, school
administrators and teachers, lawyers,
coaches, military people, business
owners, former pro ball players,
social workers, and just about every
other walk of life one can imagine.
"This is something all of us

chairperson for the reunion. 'The
out of towners seem to look forward
to it more than those of us living here
in San Antonio."
While the major thrust this weekend
will be the All-Classes reunion, other
classes will also be celebrating their
graduation year. One such class is
the Class of 1962.
"I loved my high school years at
Wheatley so much," recalled
Dorothy Brown Upshaw who is one
of the coordinators of that class'
reunion. "Aycock's drugstore,
Bobby socks, sock hops It's hard
to believe all that happened just 30
years ago."
The headquarters for the All Class
Reunion is the Sheraton-Gunter
Hotel on East Houston Street.
According to Brown, registration
begins Friday from 11A.M. until 3
P. M. Brown pointed out that those
who may want to attend the reunion,
but have not registered may do so by
coming to the hotel or by calling her
at 531-9609 or Irma Christian,
chairperson of the reunion, at 662-
8512.
Following the registration, there
night. A Brunch and Fashion Show
will be held at the Bright Shawl at 11
A. M. Saturday, and for those who
want a taste of the San Antonio fresh
air, the Henry Carroll Golf
Tournament kicks off at 10 A. M. at
Willow Springs Golf course.
The festivities continue Saturday
night with an 8:00 cocktail hour at
the Gunther, followed by the Maroon
and Gold Ball at the Gunter's
ballroom. Brown says the King and
Queen of Wheatley will be crowned
at that time.
Wheatley alums will have the
opportunity to go back to their school
and walk its halls again Sunday
morning when they gather for
services at 10 A. M. at Wheatley
Middle School.
The group will gather at Comanche
Park #3 from 2 P. M. until 12
midnight for the Wheatley School
Picnic. Dinner will be served from
3-5 P. M.
The alums will say good-bye to
each other at a Farewell Brunch at
Tucker's Cozy Comer at 10 A. M.
Monday.
Coach Henry B. Carroll
One of the highlights of Wheatley
High School's All Classes Reunion
will be the Henry Carroll Memorial
Golf Tournament at Willow Springs
Golf Course.
Proceeds from the tournament will
go to the Wheatley SfholarshipFund.
Wheatley alumni who were coached
by Coach Carroll say that they feel
that a scholarship in their coach's
name isafitting legacy to their mentor
and friend.
"Coach Carroll was tough on you,
and he never accepted one bit less
than the best you could give,"recalled
Ed Glosson who played football
under the legendary coach. "But if
you really wanted to get him on your
behind, literally, just let him hear
you were messing up when it came
to your education. He'd wait until
you got out of the shower and call
you over to get your licks."
Phyllis Redix is enhancing the lives of familes and children in her new
position as Client Services Supervisor for the City of San Antonio. Redix,
who is a 1970 graduate of Wheatley High School (Phyllis Pleasant), returned
to San Antonio after her husband retired from the military.
