ever having one of her grad-
uates to fail when taking the. state

A complete course of cosmetol-

pleted In six months, an instruc-
tor's course three months, and a

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For
the first time In the history
of Ihe Birmingham district,
Negro girls are employed as
clerks In white grocery stores.
Unlike oilier large cities, there
is still plenty of unemployment
among both white and Negro
men and especially women of
both groups.
White housewives of the
wealthy suburbs jnst out of
Birmingham railed Mountain
Brook, Hollywood and Moun-
tain Terrace, populated by the
owners and officials of Bir-
mingham's industry and busi-
ness, are now served their ra-
tions hy two bronie youths.
These two young women were
given jobs as clerks when they
answered a newspaper adver-
tisement. The store owner was
surprised at their rrquest for
jobs but offered them a cliencc
to work.
They have as much right
to work as anybody," be said.

Mr. and Mrs. George W. Smith
celebrated their eighth anniversary
on April 3, at their home, 015 Mcn-
chaca street. The table w<* cov-
ered by a beautiful lace clotb and
held a crystal bowl of mixed flow-
ers. Crystal candlesticks were on
each side. A punch bowl occupied
one end of the table and the other
held the beautifully embossed cake

Ellis who died on Friday morning.
