West End chooses 1991
Woman of the Year
One of the highlights of West End
Baptist Church's Annual Women's
Day was the recognition of Mrs,
Cloma E. Reed as West End's
Woman of the Year. Mrs. Reed is a
senior member of West End where
she was Junior Choir pianist for 28
years and Adult Sunday School
pianist for 31 years. She presently
serves as Bible teacher for Ruth
Circle of Mission I.
She was a a public school tcacher
in Gonzales County for six years,
Guadalupe Seminary English
Teacher for 21 years, and operated a
nursery school for eight years.
The Women's Day observance,
held Sunday, Sept. 15, with Sunday
School featuringguestteachers. The
morning and afternoon services
began with devotion by West End's
Missions I & II, followed by the
Women' s Day Chorus processional.
Sis. Wanda Moody directed the
Chorus.
Sis. Margaret Robinson of Mt.
Zion First Baptist Church was the
morning service speaker. Her
daughter, Sis. Marsha Littlefield
performed the introduction. Sis.
Dottic Pryor of St. Stephens Baptist
Church was guest soloist.
In the afternoon service, Sis.
Lorraine Mills of Mt. Sinai Baptist
Church, was the afternoon speaker,
making a dynamic presentation. Sis.
Viola Knowlcs of Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church was guest soloist.
West End members Sis. Thelma
Williams, Sis. Doris Williams, and
Sis. Lenora Brown crcatcd the
Mrs. Cloma E. Reed
mauve, burgundy, and white corsages
worn by the participants and the
church decorations as well as the
Educational Building.
In keeping with the day's theme,
"Christian Women are Known by
the Fruits They Bear," the finance
captains, representing biblical
women, were known as Financial
Fruit Bearers.
Each church family present was
presented a Souvenir Book which,
because of the content, the remaining
books will serve as an outreach
ministry to sick and shut-ins and
women in city jails which will be
undertaken by Mission II.
The book was compiled by Sisters
Brenda Anderson, Thelma Williams,
Lenora Brown, and Murina Collins.
Sis. Margie Moore served as
Chairlady of the event with Sister
Leotccn Stevens assisting as Co-
Chairlady. Brother. Mark Williams
was dcacon's advisor. Grace First
Four Districts gather to
honor Henrietta Griffin
In the past she has served as
secretary of Mission #2 and as first
vice-president.
Mrs. Griffin founded the United
Christian Women's Council of San
Antonio and vicinity, a fifteen year
non-profit chartered organization,
she is a past president of the Baptist
Minister's Wives of San Antonio
and vicinity, and serves as trustee
and faculty member of the G uadalupe
College.
A board member of the Community
Action Advisory Board, she was
selected Outstanding Woman of the
Year by the Express News in 1980.
She is a member of st. James Baptist
Church where her husband, Rev. C.
Griffin, pastors.
Henrietta Griffin
Over 150 women from San
Antonio and Austin, representing
four Baptist District Associations,
gathered Saturday, Sept. 21, at West
End Baptist Church, to honor Mrs.
Henrietta Griffin.
Representatives of the ML Zion
District Association, Guadalupe
Baptist District Association,
Guadalupe Landmark District
Association, and St. John Landmark
Association lauded Mrs. Griffin for
her many years of Christian service
and leadership on the state, local,
and national level.
Mrs. T. 0. Brown presented her an
Award of Appreciation for Service
rendered to the Guadalupe District
Association and the San Antonio
Area of the Missionary Baptist
General Convention of Texas.
Rev. C. Griffin brought the
message for the event.
Mrs. Griffin has served in various
capacities in the Guadalupe District
Association where she organized the
Junior Mission and Y. W. A. of the
District. She currently serves as
corresponding secretary of the
Sunday School and Baptist Training
Union Director of the District.

gets promotion
Black Achievement
Association will
recognize Black
achievers
The San Antonio Black Achieve-
ment Award Association will honor
several San Antonions for their
achievements at their fourth annual
Black Achievement Awards pre-
departments at St. Philips from
students and faculty members.
Neighborhood residents may
participate in 'Project Redirectory'
by depositing their old directories in
the designated trash dumpster on the
corner of Dakota and Mitlman,
outside the Sutton Learning Center.
This is St. Philip's second year in
participating in this program in
cooperation with Southwestern Bell.
Over400 telephone directories were
DPS Captain Adolph Thomas
Texas Department of Public Safety
Captain Adolph Thomas has been
promoted to commander of the
department's Training Bureau in
Austin.
A Seguin native who graduated
from San Antonio's Edgewood High
School, Thomas mostrecently served
as captain of the Narcotics Service in
the DPS District 3 office in San
Antonio.
Following his 1969 graduation
from the DPS rccruitschool, Thomas
began his law enforcement career as
a highway patrol trooper stationed in
San Antonio. He later became an
investigator and then sergeant for
the Narcotics Service. In 1988 he
was promoted to captain and spent
two years at the DPS Headquarters
Narcotics Service. He returned to
San Antonio in 1990.
He holds degrees in Criminal
Justice from San Antonio College
and Southwest Texas State
University. He has been an instructor
in law enforcement at San Antonio
college since 1974.
Thomas and his wife, the former
Shirley McDonald of San Antonio,
have two children.

DFW Aiport
Vemell Sturns, a native Texan and
Ft. Worth resident, recently became
one of only four Black Americans to
serve as an airport administrator.
Stums, 51, was recently named
Executive Director of the world's
second busiestaiiport, the Dallas/Ft.
Worth International Airport. The
position will make him one of the
highest paid public officials in North
Texas.
Sturns, who also serves as
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
for Jarvis Christian College, has been
DFW Airport's Deputy Executive
Director since 1986.
Sturns is a graduate of Prairie V iew
A& M College.
Several years ago, when he was
DFW's Deputy Executive Director,
Stums said in an interview, that he
was an East Texas farm boy who
liked to make paper airplanes for
fun, but never dreamed he would be
the number two man at one of the
nation's largest airports.
Childress Memorial
Church to host Gang
Awareness Seminar
A Gang Awareness Seminar will be
presented at Childress Memorial
Church of God in Christ, 901 N.
Pine, Saturday, Sept. 21 from 6 p.m.-
7 p.m.
The Gang Intelligence Unit of the
San Antonio Independent School
District will show citizens how to
identify signs of gang activity and
how to address the problem.
The presentation will include a
review of gang activity in San
Antonio, two different videos, and a
question and answer period.
