sister1 ?. hair was well
kept.
During tbe time
Le:s£.ip began her career
she was working in the
fields of East Texas
during the day and
dressing hair at night
and on Saturdays.
All along while
Lessie was pressing and
curling hair she was
never content with just
the basics, she bad a
desire to venture
further into tbe field
of cosmetology. She
always felt that the
personal appearance of
an individual was so
very important to Mack
women both young and
old After leaving
Texas, Lessie moved to
the West Coast/ to Sea
Side California, and
there met a Californian
that conducted a seminar
on hair weaving. lessie
was very impressed with
the idea hair
weaving.Lessie did not
rest until she succeeded
in finding a method and
technique that would fce
suitable for all types
of hair as well as
variations in clients
according to their
needs. Her first client
was a young black woman
in Sea Side California.
The technique that she
used was totally
different from that she
saw demonstrated to her.
After finding that
her endeavor was rapidly
growing throughout Cal.,
she decided to bring her
idea back to Texas,
where she originally
began. lessie went back
to Texas in 1970 and
opened a business there
presently named Houston
House of Hair Weaving,
located in Houston,
Texas at 3117 Dowling
St. Her location is
centrally located in the
city which makes it so
convenient for the
clients to easily get to
her shop from any area
in the city or the
suburban areas
surround i ng Houston.
Since lessie created her
own technique she has
not been selfish with
her God-given talent,
many successful
cosmetologist have been
taught by Lessie, and
many today have their
own business
establi shments.
m When lessie reflects
back on the days where
she made as little as
$1.50 per day and today
she has had days where
she has received as much
as $2,500 in one single
day. Lessie has
personally added beauty
through hair weaving to

LESSIE STARTS IN
BEAUTY FIELD WITH

a
Lessie Caraway
After having been a
"beautician" for many
years, lessie Caraway
found the need to go
deeper into the field of
cosmetology. That is
when she became a
specialist in the field
of Hair Weaving.
Before getting into
the interesting aspect
of Lessie's method of
hair weaving let's look
hack a few years at how
she began.
Lessie was a young
black girl brought up in
the rural area of East
Texas. She had a great
desire to beautify black
wom( n and this was
through the caring of
their hair. lessie was
looking through a
catalog one day and she
saw a "straightening
comb", out of curiosity
she began to search
throughout the house to
see if she could find
something or some way to
improvise. She found a
fork (eating utensil)
and she had a coal oil
lamp and she heated the
fork by the lamp and as
her first client she
straightened her little
sister's hair, Lessie
was only 8 years old at
the time. Of course, she
was successful in her
attempt. At the time
that she began "doing
hair" she used hair
greases such as Supree,
Dolly Dimple, Plucose,
and Polly Peacbtree. She
continued on and became
the coinmunities "hair
dresser". During those
times she only charged
10<t. 'Hie press and curl
was the most popular
service because most of
the clients would "wash"
their hair the day
before because they
didn't have hair dryers.
lessie's interest in
hair care seem to have
come natural, she always
cared about the
condition and beauty of
a head of hair. Her
interest was so great
that her parents saw the
need in investing in a
straightening comb,
which they ordered from
Walter Field & Co., the
comb cost $1.95 and
during that time that
was a lot of money to
invest. Lessie . was
punished when she first
straightened her
sister's hair, because
it was thought at that
time the heat would
cause damage to the
brain, since the child
was so young.
At the time Lessie
first became a business
woman, which was
actually at age 13, she
took her earnings and
help to contribute, to
the bills of the
household. Of course at
that time the bills
.nostly consisted of the
grocery bill, but she
was very happy to help
her family. Lessie's
family did not have
electricity, gas, water,
or telephone bills as
did not any of the
community. She is one of
seventeen children born
to Bill Solomon and
Elizabeth Solomon and
again as a child she was
very industrious, £he
many important city
officials, doctors, and
other celebrities.
Since the year of
1983 lessie has gone
somewhat into
srmi -retirement dm , to a
lack injury, but she has
not allowed the injury
to slow her down at all,
in fact she is now
devoting much of her
time to conducting
seminars, workshops, and
also to making her own
products in the line of
shampoo, setting gels,
hair sprays, hair oils,
and many other products.
Her recent
accomplishment that she
is very proud of is the
State of Texas is
depending on her
expertise in conducting
training sessions for
cosmetologists all over
the state. The State
Board has the utmost
confidence in her
ability to train in this
specialized field of
cosmetology.
Lessie has said that
she has never seen or had.
a client that she could
not apply hair weaving.
This is where you will
f ind her technique so
different and unique
from other hair weaving
methods. She feels that
hair weaving is
conducive for cosmetic
reasons as well as for
the mere luxury ' of
having it. Many persons
have damaged their hair
with harsh chemicals and
therefore the hair
weaving will allow their
hair an opportunity to
rest and grow
beautifully. The methods
used by Lessie are as
follows: 1)Cording, this
is where the hair is \
of ' an inch to one inch
in length. 2)Bracing,
this is where the client
is partially bald. 3)
Interlocking, this is
where the hair is a
normal length, two
inches and longer.
And, these are the
three methods that
Lessie has used for the
past years to make her
business and life
successful. All three
methods were invented by
Mrs. Lessie Caraway.
lessie offers this
advice to all
cosmetologist, "If you.
have a dream, or idea in
mind, pursue it and make
it become a reality".
Lessie also has a
shop here in San Antonio
where you can go to
receive her special
touch in hair weaving.
It's located at 1414
E. Commerce St. and the
telephone number is
228-0655.
