THE NEED FOR A
FAMILY OR
INDIVIDUAL BUDGET
By Jacqueline A. Glosson
Personalized Rud^et
Services
V/hat is a budget? A
budget is defined as a
flexible guide which
represent s an entity's
fixed and variable -needs
and wants. It contains all
your .expe-RKttwres and
income and in the end,
■ shows a balance, or
rather, what remains
after expenditures.
To thcS't end, one may
ask, "Why do I need a
budget?" Especially since
you, more than anyone
else, knows whdt you
spend your money on.
To th;>t question, 1
concede, yes, you are the
person who knows more
- about on what and where
, you spend your money.
However, I must ask "Do
you know how much you
spend on what and where
and how often you
spend"? f:ven more
importantly, "Are you
saving, andy do you know
how much you are
saving!'"
II you can not put your
hands on this information
immediately, then you
have answered your own
question ro account for
all vour expenditures,

which includes your
savings.
.You may ponder whv
vour sdvinfjs is considered
an expenditure. Anvone
in the financial services
industry will tell you that
you must always, pav
yourself first, whether if
be, one dollar, two
dollars or 10 percent of
vour gross salary--you
must pav yourself first.
You must look out for
yourself in order to take
care ot everything else.
So, pay yourself fir^t.
You may ask why you
need to account for all
your expenitures. The
money is gone anyway,
right? To account for all
your expenditures means
to evaluate whether you
actually need or truly
want everything on which
you spend your hard
earned money. If you
scrutinize your spending
habits, you will surely
find some place to save
and use the money for a
much needed
purpose—more insurance,
new shoes for
Tommy/.^anie, dental
examination....
So' you see, a budget is
a very important
instrument by which to
live. It is the avenue by
which you, plan your
future.
