And many of those "distinguish-
ed Virginians" live outside the
beloved Old Dominion.
Ho It was • pleasant surprise
to Dr. Clila.nd B. Powell, pub-
lisher of the Amsterdam News
of this city, to receive a hand-
somely engraved Invitation, in the
name of the (iovernor Thomas B.
Stanley and chamber of commerce
president Frank A. Ernst.
Of course Dr. Powell waa
aware of the fart that thine*
In his native state had changed
—slightly that is—since his boy-
hood tiaya in Newport News
where he was born A2 years ago.
Yet. a mistake could have brcn
made in his calculations—for aa
comic Red Buttons says. "Strange
things are happening."
But not that strange. For as
soon a-H Ernst discovered that Dr.
Powell was not a white Virginian,
he immediately expressed his
"regrets" and a lot of other ba-
loney about Dr. Powell should
know, etc.. etc.. etc. All to cover
lip his damphool blunder—any
idiot reading the biography of the
stirerssful doctor would imme-
diately see that he was not of the
white rare.
Funny thing, Dr. Powell says
he is going to attend, or appear
In Richmond unlras he gets a
withdrawal of the invitation from
the governor himself—who poor
soul. Is fighting to keep out of
this mess.
Strangely enough, a serond In-
vitation was missent—to a col-
ored woman. Mrs. Ella Phillips
Stewart, of Tolrdo, Ohio, a reg-
istered pharmacist, who toured
Asia for the atate department
in 195I-.1A to explain the Ameri-
ran way of life. This one hadn't
come up for explanation then,
but Mrs. Stewart would have
a jim-dandy time sloughing this
one off—although she says site
does not plan at this time to
attend, or appear at the dinner.
When the Jam*stown celebra-
tion was In the planning stages,
tHe governor with all good intent,
had said he would rail in leadrrs
of both rarlal groups to work
out some partiripation for the
colored Virginians, within the
framework of the tentative plan.
Word to this effect reached the
ears of the "boss" of Virginia,
sitting in the U. S. senate and
the governor's good intentions
just made another block in the
pavement of that famous place
which is said to be paved with
good Intentions. Colored Virgin-
ians have heard nothing more
until the Powell letter gave them
a chance to guffaw.
Fifty years ago. when the 300th
anniversary of the settlement of
JanentowA waa eelrbrated. a fa-
mous Virginian of colored extrac-
tion. Colonel <*(lea B. JariuM.
wangled $200,000 front the federal
government to erect a building
and display the progresa of Vir-
ginia's colored Inhabitants.
At that time, this huge sum
placed in the hands of the colored
director, raused a nine-day sen-
sation. The building was erected
—not too close to the main build-
ings of the exposition—and at-
tracted thousands of visitors of
both races, yet, the final outcome
of the separate participation left
a bad taste.
Why the sponsors did not in-
elude colored Virginians In this
celebr-iion has not been ex-
plained. Meanwhile, like a worm
in hot ashes, the president of the
chamber of commerce has a tick-
lish job getting both himself
and the governor off the hook.
Won't Russia like this one?
Here's the qumtion ... is Dr.
Powell a successful Virginian Or
not? He's been a successful med-
ical practitioner; a successful X-
ray laboratory operator; pub-
lisher of a newspaper, director of
a thriving iusuranre company,
eo-proprirtor of a prosperous liq-
uor store among many other
business enterprises, and a former
member of the New York State
Athletic commission. Just how
much more is demanded—except
that he change the color of Ids
