lowing the business session, an elec-
tion of officers was held. The flresi-

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —Race ten-
sion snmng whites her* came to •
head last week and burst Into open
violence as Irnte white men attacked
and stoned the automobile of a young
white mnn who sst beside a Negro
minister and hla wife in a railroad
station.
The young white man, Lamar
Weaver, had to flee for his life, after
some 90 white racisls converged up-
on him with hate-fllled eyes, after
their efforts to bar the Rev. F. L.
Shuttlesworth and his wife from a
white waiting room at Birmingham
Terminal Railroad station, failed.
Wesver, a steel worker, who oi enly
defied the dictum* of segregation and
advocated racial integration, had sat
beside Rev. Shuttlesworth nnd his
wife at the stntion and entered Into
conversation.
Weaver was later arrestej) by po-
lice for speeding after he accelerated
his car to evajH* a shower of stones
thrown by the white mob. In record-
er's court, he was fined $25 and $5
costs of court for speeding, despite
the fact that his life was endangered.
Weaver told newsmen he was leav-
ing for Washington where he wasgto
testify before the house civil rigiita
subcommittee on racial conditions in
Alabama.
He stated that he had no definite
plans for the future, baft1 would not
return to Birmlnchnm.
The 211-year-old Weaver said he
was threatened with loss of life, lost
his w ife, and was losing his home be-
cause he campaigned for Negro rights.
Weaver had tried to run for the city
commission here, but withdrew as a
candidate because of the "bitterness''
of the campaign.
He declared in a letter to Sens-
tor Hennings (I>., Mo.), "I would
like to bring with me the Rev. F.
L. Sh ut ties worth whose church snd
home were bombed out from under
him. Together we could give your
committee facts about violence, dis-
crimination nnd economic pressure
brought shout to Negroes." •
