NAACP, AFL-CIO SUMMIT MEETING
STATEMENT iwtn'd, jointly, following a "summit" meet-
ing of the National Association for the Advancement of
Color- .1 lVople ami the AKL-CIO, sets forth that the powerful
labor organization ami the world's foremost human rights as
locintion will continue their "long standing, cooperative asaoci-
it ion to attain full eivil rights for all Americans, both within,
ami without, the labor movement, as one of America's most
pressing necessities."
There is no question that, despite forthright resolutions by
poliov makers, the goo-1 intentions of the fair-minded, and the
admonition of top leaders, discrimination, racism, and bias do
e\M in some an as of the labor movement—just as they exist
in all level, of American life from the chtireh and government
to the meanest Mississippi hamlet.
The NAAfI' ami AFI.l'lO executives who met in Wash
iiigtuu. last week, discussed three areas of complaints: the
absolute and total exclusion of Negro workers by some unions;
discrimination within certain unions concerning promotions and
seniority, and Jim Crow local unions.
Too nian> details have not been revealed of last week's
meeting, its discussions ami findings, and which was attended
bv George Meany. AFli-CIO president; Hoy \\ ilkin*. executive
secretary of the N'AACl'; A. Philip Kandolph, AFL-CIO vice
president, probably the nn>*t pow--rful an-1 respected Negro
figure in the labor movement; Herbert Ilill, NAAt'l* labor
secretary, and other lesser figure*.
But the joint statement, issued by both NAACP and AFI,
CIO. declared that the AFI.-CIO gave assurance, to the NAACP
of its continuing determination to strive to eliminate diseriin
ination in the American trade union movement.
The AFL-CIO reminded that the union constitution "guar
ant- i s the right of all workers, without regard to race, creed,
color, national orisrin or ancestry, to share equally in the full
benefits of union organization."
Further, it is Meanv s opinion that the approach to the
problems is .1 systematic organir-ation-wide program to find,
and root out - \ ils, rather than to aet piecemeal on isolated
complaints Th NAACP is in agreement with thi> thinking.
That this significant summit meeting ended on an en-
four iL'int: plane i* attested to by the fact that, in the statement
issued by the principals, it was reaffirmed that the two or
(ran /ati--lis would continue their long-standing cooperative
association directed toward attaining full civil rights for all
Am . an-. - til within and without the labor movement . . ."
