Editor Megaphone:
Paris island, S. C., Oct. 6.—This
year's opening of school has brought
many changes in the lives of Southwes-
tern sons. We have been scattered to
nil parts, preparing to serve our coun-
try. Boys from S. U. can be found in
•very branch of the service, and they
are making good. But at this time our
thoughts all turn back to the old col-
lege town, the campus, and the faculty.
We think of you who are left to carry
on the work, and at times we get a bit
homesick, but S. II. taught us to be
men, and we are trying to do a man 'a
job.
At present I am stationed in Marine
Barracks, Paris Island, South Carolina.
I can see the smile on the face of Dr.
Pegues as I mention his old State. I do
not see much of the State because we
are confined to this awful island.
We fellows, from Texas are proud of
the patriotism of Texans. It is almost
impossible to find a single company in
the whole oorpa which does not have
from one ten men from Texas. In
my company there are six—two Hous-
ton lawyers, a school teacher, two Uni-
versity of Texas boys, one of whom is
the son of Hon. Thos. H. Ball. "Char-
lie" Harbour and Tom James are hero
and doing fine.
We have completed our training now
and the company will probably be ship-
ped out this week somewhere.
But I find myself a student once more,
attending regular scheduled classes. I
have transferred to the Radio School,
■where we learn wireless, hand signals,
and prepare for service aboardship, in
the trenches, or in the air. It will re-
quire about sixteen weeks to complete
the course. Grady Timmons,
Radio School, Paris Island, S. C.,

Inclosed you will find one long-green
sanipl>! of th«f money Uncle Sam hands
out to his henchmen. For said speci-
men please send me your esteemed pa-
per for the next nine months. (I be-
lieve this covers the tax; if not, say so).
After taking The Meg. for three years
3 find I have the habit, and n habit is
a thard thing- t.n lirnnk.—Semefrrrnesrit is
a hard thing to make, too.
Just at present I am doing my "bit"
to form the habit of flying, an(i it is
eoming with not the greatest ease in
the world. One day I think I have it,
and the next "Puf," as the French
lieutenant stationed here says, "she is
go." All the same it is great sport
and getting more interesting every day.
The best of luck to old S. U. and The
Megaphone, I am, yours truly,
Frank G. Ragsdale.

PAN HELLENIC ELECT OFFICERS
At the first regular meeting of the
Pan Hellenic Council last Wednesday
night at the Kappa Sigma House, the
following officers were elected for the
ensuing year: President, C. I. Bounds;
vice president, Joe Cougliran; secretary
and treasurer, T. H. McDaniel. The
Council unanimously agreed to change
the regular pledge day from first Mon-
day after six weeks' examinations to
the 29tli of October.. The Council also
agreed that no "Frat" parties would
be given before pledge day.
Regular meeting of Pan Hellenic will
be held the first Monday night of ev-
ery month.
INTERCOLLEGIATE DEBATE
ATTRACTS MANY MEN
The call for men interested in the
Triangular Debate met with a hearty
response, there being about ten or
twelve reporting to try out. The sub-
ject has not been decided on yet owing
to delay in the submitting of questions
from which to choose. With the ma-
terial trying put Southwestern should
have a winning team at Waxahachie
and at home this year.
While our contract with Baylor ex-
pired last year, it would probably be
renewed this year, proper interest de-
manding it.
John R: Nunn of Georgetown, a Soph-
omore at Southwestern, has received
papers from Senator Morris Sheppard
stating that he has been appointed to
Minneapolis. Nunn is now preparing
for the examinations. Faust G. Collier
of Spur, Texas, has received an appoint-
ment to West Point Naval Academy.
Collier is a member of the Junior class
at Southwestern and is also preparing
for the West Point examinations which
will be held some time in April.
"Tubby" David, brother of Miss
"Cholly" David, came up for the
Headrick-Bishop wedding. He is in
the Medical School at Galveston this
year.

Drink will drive a man to anything.

What is this world coining to? It's
women, women, women. Why, half our
parents are women.

While on the other hand this is a
man's world, said one boob. It was
discovered by a man. But, said anoth
er, a woman hocked her jewels so he
could make the trip. And now, said the
first, they are hunting for the man who
gave her the jewels.

'FRESHMAN STUNTS'
The Goddess of Liberty, while walk-
ing down Congress Avenue in Austin,
saw the capitol. He at once turned to
his friend and said: "Oh, there's the
court house."
We were in hopes that our freshmen
had overcome their greenness by this
time, but we are sorry to have to note
that Fish Thomas had to be called down
by the traffic cop for jay-walking in
Austin last Saturday.
When Fish Wofford arrived in Austin
Saturday he met up with some Cameron
friends who invited him to a box party
at the Majestic. After the game Wof-
ford rushed to a cafe and filled a shoe
box full of sandwiches, cheese and
crackers. At 8:15 he was seen on his
way to the box party with his shoe box
under his arm.

POSITIVE KNOWLEDGE AS TO
WHEN THE WAR WILL END
Absolute knowledge I have none, but
my aunt's washerwoman's son heard
the policeman on the beat say to the
laborer on the street that he had a let-
ter just last week, written in Latin (or
was it Greek?) from a Chinese Coolie
in Tim)>tfcktoo, who-said the negroes in
Cuba knew of a traveling man in a Tex-
as town who got it straight from a cir-
cus clown, that a man in Klondike
heard the news from a gang of South
American Jews about a man in Borneo
that heard somebody who claimed to
know of a swell society female rake
whose mother-in-law will undertake to
prove to her second husband's niece,
and state it in a printed piece, that she
had a son who had a friend who knew
just when the war would end.
