I'm still enraptured with Th> San
Saba ('ounty Skt tchb&ok, thanks to
Grant and Dona Robinson. I expect
to be for sometime to come. The
name of the game is "nostalgia a
longing to go back t< one's home
town. These black and white
Xeroxed pages have reminded me
of so many things I didn't know 1
remembered.
On one page is a fairly accurate
drawing of the old San Saba High
School with the notation "Buit
1924." I remember driving by while
the brick building was under con
struction. It was a tairly new build
ing when I began my high school
day.-, inside its windowed brick
walls.
I can locate every room from the
drawing. In the northeast corner
room I studied history under the
guidance of Helen Lidstone, a dedi
cated teacher if ever t here was one
She managed that class with know
ledge and authority. A few things
did escape her, however. Like the
boy who attached a small mirror to
his right shoe and quietly shuffled
his foot under the desks of nearby
girls. Of course we ail tucked our
skirts closer to our bodies defeating
his attempts at anatomical study
ihe four southwest windows m
the school building were in tht
south end of the science laboratory .
I skimmed through General Science
and struggled mightily with Chem
istry in this room I detested Chem
istry and "took it for the simple
reason that 1 needed a science
credit. It was either Chemistry or
Physics. But that s not w hy 1
remember this room and those w in
dows. On several occasions one of
those windows provided access to
the outside during the final class
period of the day.
There were four of us who dis
covered we could "escape" by go
ing through the Home Ec depart
ment, into the laboratory and out
side through a w indow. One of the
girls was a Home Ec student and
one day the rest of us talked her in
to finding us some food in the
department. All she came up with
was a loaf of bread and a bottle ol
catsup. We slathered our bread
slices with catsup and happily
chewed our "sandwiches." Our
strength was renewed for the es
cape.
W e raised a w indow , pushed tht
heavy wire screen loose and
climbed through. It was a short
drop to the ground and we were off
to downtown San Saba. We walked
the several blocks. Not many kids
had cars at their beck and call those
days.
We were never caught in our tin
conventional departures from
school. One day we did run head
on into Essie Gilbreath, the fresh
man English teacher, right in front
of Kimbrough's Jewelry Store. She
looked us over but nobody stopped
