In Feeding
The Beef
Cattle
The following article by A. L. Ward (jives many (food suggestions
for cattle feeding.
Faadiag of Baby Baovai
fRT 7e!J!n^o7""bii by beeves has become of such importance that
rmtioni for each thirty-day period have been worked out. These rations
arc planned so that the most rapid gain* can be made. The amount*
indicated in each ration are approximately what the cukes will con-
sume daily.
FIRST THIRTY-DAY FKKDING 1'KKIOI)
Ground shelled corn, grain xorghumx, or barley 4 1-2 to 5 lbs.; 43
percent cottonseed meal, prime i|uality, 1 lb.; Hay, hulls or other
roughage, 7 to 8 lbs.
(Cottonseed hulls are a convenient and economical roughage to
Use in a ration properly balanced with grain and cottonseed meal.
Beit results are secured when mixed with other roughage such as
ailage, or good hay. The special advantage in using some hulls us
roughage is that the hulls are practically free from dust or trash and
can be fed with little waste.)
SECOND THIRTY-DAY FKKDING I'KRIOD
(Calves should weigh 400 to 410 pounds.)
Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley ,j to 1-2 lbs.;
48 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality I 1-4 to I 1-2 lbs.; Hay,
bulla or other roughage 7 1-2 to 8 1-2 lbs.
THIRD THIRTY-DAY FKKDING I'KRIOD
(Calves should weigh 4.">0 to 4HO pounds.)
, Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley .'> 1-2 to f> 1-2 ll>s ;
49 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality I 1-2 to I 1 lbs.; liny,
hulls or other roughage T to S lbs.
FOURTH THIRTY-DAY FKKDING I'KRIOD
(Calves should wrijfh approximately .r>()0 pounds.
Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums r barl<-y <1 12 to 7 III)-. ;
43 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality 1 •') I to 2 lb.-.; Hay, hulls
or other rouhgage, 7 lbs.
FIFTH THIRTY DAY FKKDING I'KRIOD
(Calves should weigh 545 to 5fi0 pounds.'
Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley 7 1-2 to s I lb-.;
43 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality 2 lb-.; Hay. hull- or other
v- roughage f> to 7 lbs.
SIXTH THIRTY-DAY FEEDING PERIOD
(Calves should weigh approximately 600 pounds.)
Ground shelled com, grain sorghums, or barley 8 1-2 to 9 1-2 lbs.;
43 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality 2 lbs.; Hay, hulls or other
roughage 6 to 7 lbs.
If alfalfa hay or clover is used instaed of the non-leguminous
hays, the amount of hay indicated in the above rations should be cut
approximately one-half.
As an example of adding oats to the ration, I would suggest for
the Third Thirty-Day Feeding Period (when calves weigh 450 to
400 poundsi that instead of using the ration indicated, the following
be used:
Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley !i to 6 lbs.; Oats
3 to 4 lbs.; 43 percent cottonseed meal, prime quality 2 lbs.; Rough-
age whatever amount they will consume.
In calculating these rations it has been estimated that the calves
will gain from I 3-4 to 2 pounds daily throughout the feding period.
They will make such gain.- provided they are well-bred calves and the
attendant has been careful in the daily handling and feeding of his
calves. Many practical feeders have gotton good results by using
heavier amounts of cottonseed meal than are indicated in the sug-
gested rations.
If it is desired to feed the calves for a shorter feeding period, the
amount of grain and cottonseed meal should be increased in the same
proportion as the time is shortened. The foregoing raitons are for
a Six Months' Feeding Period. If the time is cut to five months, the
amount of grain and cottonseed meal should b< increased by 1-0
throughout the feeding period.
If the feeder desires to bring the calves through the winter in good
condition without hoping to get rapid gains, the following is sug-
gested for calves 5 to 10 months of age receiving silage and hay as
roughage :
Kqual parts Ground grain and 43 percent cottonseed meal, prime
quality. Use 3 to 5 pounds of this mixture per calf per day.
FKKDING YKARUNGS
(500 or 1100 pounds to 775 or *00 pounds).
FIRST FIFTKKN DAYS
Ground shelled corn grain sorghums, or barley 4 lbs.; 43 percent
cottonseed meal, prime quality I lb.; Cottonseed hulls K lbs.
During this period gradually increase the grain until at the begin-
ning of the Second Fifteen-day Period the yearlings will be receiv-
ing the amount indicated in the following ration:
SECOND FIFTKKN DAYS
(■round shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley t> lbs.; 43 percent
cottonseed meal, prime quality 2 lbs.; Cottonseed hulls x lbs.
Gradually increase the amount of grain until at the beginning of
the Third Fifteen-day Period the yearlings will be receiving the
amounts indicated in the following ration:
THIRD FIFTKKN DAYS
Ground shelled corn, grain sorghums, or barley II to 12 lbs.; 13
percent cottonseed meal, prime quality 3 lbs.; Cottonseed hulls 7 to
N lbs.
