There ii no home remedy forTp.
pendicitii. If everyone whU
learn that sentence by heart there
1 would be few, if any, deaths front
this disease. The danger of tho
use of home treatment or
medicines in any case of
stomachache cannot be over-
emphasised.
The appendis is a sausage-shap-
ed organ about four inches long
located on the right side of tho
lower abdomen and attached to tfc*
beginning of the large intestine. U
is probably of no use to civilised
man, but ran cause him great pain
if it becomes infected. Infection
may result when the appendix is
blocked by a collection of matter
from the intestine, or it may come
from any infection in the body,
such as one of the nose or throat.
The pain of appendicitis is not
always first noticed in the area
where the appendix is located an.l
consequently the patient is apt to
mistake it for an ordinary stom-
achache. In any case where sud-
den pain in the abdomen is accom-
panied by moderate fever, nausea
and tenderness in the appendix
region, appendicitis should he sus-
pected. The doctor should be call-
ed at once.
Until the doctor comes, the pa-
tient should be put to bed and
made to lie quietly. Never rub
the stomach or apply hot water
bottles. The patient should be
given nothing to eat or drink, not
ever water, and no medicine of any
kind. Above all he should not be
given a laxative. Any medicine
adds greatly to the danger of
death.
If the doctor finds from his ex-
amination thati the case is one of
acute appendicitis, he will usually
advise an operation to remove tho
appendix immediately. Any delay
may result in perforation or gan-
grene of the appendix and cause
peritonitis which may be fatal.
With early diagnosis and immedi-
ate operation, the outlook is excel-
lent. There is no reason to be
alarmed about an appendectomy,
as it is one of the most commonly
performed operations and, if dono
in time, is usually successful.
