ONE INCH RAIN FALLS
Shackelford county got an inch of rain last Friday night, pretty
general throughout the Atunty. This makes over three inches of rain
fall in the county in the month of July, and one inch in the month of
August, giving us an excellent season. It cinches the cotton crop, and
late feed will be good. Grass is as green as in the spring time, and my,
look at the fat cattle, and best of all, the price of cattle is sky high
already, and looks like they are going higher.

POLITICAL DISCUSSION

I am wondering whether you are not trying to hide the faet that i
Hun. Jas. Wilson, who defeated you in the old 1:2th district, ran you
off the stump in that campaign, on your public record.
I am wondering if you are not hiding from the scruBiny of the vat-
era of the 17th Congressional District, that your conduct toward the
President of the United States and the Federal Government was so
menacing thutf they found it necessary to exercise a surveillance over
your activities, and sent stenographers to take your* speeches, which
almost) amounted to sedition.
I am wondering if you will not try to divert the attention of the
voters of the 17th Congressional district from the two campaigns
you made against our congressman, Hon. Thomas L. Ltlanton. in which
you were overwhelmingly defeated on the record you had made.
1 shall make this race on the same high plant? which character-
ized the first campaign this year and now 1 put you to notice that
1 am going to take issues with you on the record you hive made
both as an official and on public questions wliich are of vital in-
terest to the citizenship of this congressional district.
These issues are going to be aired for the consideration of the vot-
ers of this congressional district and your attempt to push them in
the background with camouflage will be exposed.
Believing, as your letter above referred to indicates, that you are
undertaking to side-track tile real isues anil cover up your own rec-
ord, I cun see nothing to be gained by accepting your invitation to
dittcus sth matters which you mention and which, are only sinoke
screens to cover up your un-enviable record, in an effort t slip
into congress on a mud-slinging, personal campaign, with the issues
involved, disguised and forgotten for the moment.
1 therefore, .decline to enter into a contest of Bhis kind and shall
proceed along the littvs of advocating construotiee measures for the
benefit of the citizenship and defending my record as a business j
man and a- a citizen against) your slanderous attack, and at the same !
time calling anew, to the attention of the voters of this district, |
your unsavory i-omrd. In the light of your r'ciri. it is my opinion
that you ir • ,i most dangerous nail to be irvtrmte I with a public!

OSCAR CALAWAY SPEAKS
Hon. Oscar Callaway, of Comanche, Candidate for Congress in the
17th District, spoke to a nice audience on the courthouse lawn at
1 Albany Tuesday night, in the interest of his candidacy.
Callaway was prece eded by W. Homer Shanks, of Callahan County,
who was a candidate for Congress in the first primary, but who is
actively supporting Callaway in tlie run-off campaign. Shanks spoke
of Callaway's ability and legislative experience as well as his acquaint-
ance with a large number of Congressmen ami Snators now in Con-
gress as giving this district with Callaway as its representative a
I distinct advantage, inasmuch as Callaway was interested intensely
| n benefitting agriculture and had the vision and foresight ami com-
i nianding personality to give distinctly better service than his oppo-
. nent.
i Callaway urged that he thought th> re were too many b >ards and
■ minis, ions to govern us and that he felt lik" dispensing with •< >:n

number of stockholders at from 10 cents to 50 cents on the dollars,
after he knew the sale was made at par.
He charged that Lee violated the trust given him by the stock-
holders of the railroad and was now evem after that asking that they
entire Congressional district entrust him with a commission to make
laws governing the entire nation.
