SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE
A MATTER of increasing concern is that of the con-
duct of far too any Negro students at the
"Woolworth corner" is stop, the southwest corner
of Alamo plaza ar.d iston street.
School youths—b a and girb—at this busy point
have, for a long tim made an art of being a nui-
sance.
They are intentionally obnoxious.
They mass in front of the entrance and imme-
diately inside the store itself, blocking entry into,
and exit from, the establishment with shocking bel-
ligerency.
They are rude, boisterous, vulvar, contentious.
They are aching "to start something."
fhey demonstrate the worst of the race. They
epitomize the type of conduct that the racists and
Ni-grophobists say is typical of all Negroes.
The conduct of this segment actually has so em-
barrassed Negro students of good breeding and
training that they inconvenience themselves so that
they will not have to stand at this particular corner.
On occasions, there has been poiice work to the
extent of trying to persuade the miscveants to act
with some decency.
Certainly something must be done to improve
the situation. Perhaps some of the local youth groups
might investigate the situation and try to correct it
by counseling and go^d example. It would be most
gratifying if parents would take an interest in the
problem.
But something has to be done—and the sooner
•we get to work on it, the better.
