correct.,Negroea do abhor violence.
But Young appeared to havr' mis-
stated Malcolm X's position. Malcolm
X did not call for "a shooting war"
between Negroes and whites, lie only
urged Negroea to arm themselves in
self defense.
Manv Negroes, It appears, do «jues-
tloti Malcolm X on tkii. sa\ing that
Negroes cannot win that way. How-
ever, soy serioit* report<r of Neyro
news mnst admit that generally Ne-
groes. Nbrth and Koulb. do believe in
self defense, although in ritil rights
demonstrations tliey prefer not to
ba*tlr with whites. If possible. Ne-
gr>cs are human, and M-lf defense is
a human trait.
Maleolin, however. ««« careful to
limit his supgr»tion that NegroeM
arm themselves with rifles, for sdf-
protection in their homes, particu-
larly in thr South, lie knew that to
suggest nttacks upon whites would be
foolhardy and scnsflesa.
Young went on to state in his
Speech: "I am less concerned to ith
the individual drmagogiir likr Mal-
colm X who will exploit poverty
and misery, than the condition hi
which such men flourish."
He is ripht in 'concerning liiins-lf
to'ith the condition which produces
firebrands like Malcolm X. But Young
appears to have missed the boat on
one salient point. He and some other
rights lenders nssu uc too readily that
Negroes to ill cont inur to accept the
attacks upon their persons and homes
without eventually fichting back. They
are overlooking or underestimating the
extent of thr Negro's impatience. It's
pretty ripe.
Only a few days after Youiiit's

by white racists. Negroes quickly re- J
taliated. A white man tons tied to a

In the Indiscriminate shootings and
violence, thrrr were several innocent
victims, as a Negro and a white sail-

good indication of the mood and Im-
