WORKS WAY UP—A clerk-typist,
who wanted to be an editor and
to<»k 10 editorial courses to prove it,
waa promoted recently to writer-edi-
tor on the staff of the Yearbook of
Agriculture, the Cnited States Depart-
ment of Agriculture'a moat important
publication.
The former clerk-typiat la Mm. Ella
J. Green, who transferred to Agri-
culture'a office of information from
the defenae department to which ahe
bad gone right after graduation from
a Radford, Va., high achool near the
end of World War II.
In agriculture. Mra Green became
so familiar with the thousanda of
different bulletina and leafleta pub-
lished and distributed that ahe waa
soon promoted to assistant in charge
of the central Information and pub-
licationa desk which handa out nearly
100,000 of tbe 40 million copies of
brochures and leafleta djstrlbuted an-
nually to farmera and consumera
upon their request.
A few years later ahe rose to print-
ing and publicationa assistant, and
was placed in charge of compiling tbe
USDA catalogue of publicationa, which
contains aome 3,500 titlea, and of
establiahlng an information resource
file containing the answers to almoat
any question which may be asked of
the Office of Information.
While holding down theae assign-
ments, Mra. Green attended Howard
university and the USDA graduate
school in the evening. This spring
she will complete her tenth courae in
editorial practicea for which she will
receive the school'a certificate.
The Yearbook, which Mrs. Green
will help edit, waa firat issued In
1H49—some 13 yeara before the de-
partment of agriculture waa eatab-
iished. Year after year the editlona
are adjudged among the !50 best non-
fiction books of the year.
Mrs. Green Is married and las two
