Dr. King's Image Has Not Been Damaged
W'E must presume that years of unexpressed am
held back resentment, building up wit" mt an
escape valve, triggered the verbal explosion of J
Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of In
yestigation, in which, among other things, he attack-
ed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as "the most notor
ious liar in the country."
We do not believe the image of Dr. King has been
damaged. Certainly that of Hoover has.
Hoover called Dr. King a liar because iio civil
rights leader, according to Hoover, had -;iid that
FBI agents in Albany, Ga., would take no actios; on
civil rights complaints because the FPT agf its were
southerners. That is a charge that n . i.c ■/? to
know anything about except Hoover.
King has questioned the effectiveness of the. FBI
in racial incidents, but. he declares. "I hav* never at-
tributed this merely to the presence of southerners
In the FBI. .
Hoover's outburst has been answered by civil
j-ights leaders with some statements of fact. Charles
Evers, brother of the slain Medgar Evers, Mississippi
NAACP leader, in a telegram to Hoover told him
that Negroes "can testify that prior to the Kennedy
administration, Negroes of Mississippi and Alabama
hardlv knew there was an FBI.
"Negro homes were bombed, churches burned,
we were beaten and murdered. As of today, there
have been few arrests by the FBI and no convictions
at all..."
Roy Wilkins, executive director of the NAACP,
has told President Johnson that Negroes had not
received adequate protection, whether the agents
were born in Mobile, Ala., or Minneapolis, Minn. The
Issue Is not where the agents were born, but their
performance in the discharge of their duties, Wil-
kins said.
It's a fact that nobody was arrested in Albany,
Ga., during innumerable brutalities against Negroes.
Four children were murdered in Alabama when
a church was bombed. Three civil rights workers
were lynched in Mississippi
No arrests have been made in these cases.
Very few Negroes, as Wilkins has pointed out,
•re satisfied with the FBI's actions in southern civil
rights cases. Most believe, with good reason, that
FBI agents are far less diligent in their investiga-
tion of cases where Negroes have been victimized.
Hoover's outburst certainly has not damaged the
image of Dr. King.
