Negro Votes
By the Associated Negra P-e«s
CHICAGO—If the April 14 pri-
mary vote Is any indkeatioa, the
Republicans will fail to teake it off
the Negro voters coma aext Novem-
ber.
An analysis of the primary results
disclosed that the GOP tote in the
Negro wards declined afcfcrply from
its not-too-hlg aixe in 1060. The drop
ranged between 17 to JW per cent,
with the av ragc being about per
cent.
This decrease in Negro anpport was
in spite of the overall incranae in Re-
publican party voting throughout the
city. Outside the predominantly Negro
wards, the Republicans showed a gain
of 20 per cent over the 1060 figure,
1( has been said that the drop was
caused by erstwhile Republican* vot-
ing the Democratic ticket In the first
congressional district, where Rep.
Wi.'iism L. D:tws<j& aai*wed a 2-1
margin over A. A. Rsyner. Jr., but
reports from the west aide Negro
wards disclaim thia. Hera again, ths
GOP'a showed a decided drop.
On the other hand, while the turn-
out for the Democrats waa not nearly
equal to thst of I960, the Negro vote
.showed sn increase of 1^ per cent.
In the white wsrda. ths Dec.<vrats
dropped 12.6 per cent.
The Democrats, too, hare an ex-
planation for their poor showing in the
white wards. They ssy interest in the
many Republican contests anl the
complete Isck of sny contests for state
snd county offices on the Democratic
side, account for ths drop.
