¥ AST year when the postman
^ conducted their drive on
muscular dystrophy, all of San
Antonio had a chance to learn
about, and contribute to, the
itudy of a disease that has stum|ied
the medical exjierts. One of the
most appreciative persons of that
drive was John Christopher WII-
llanii, III, of 1003 Dawson street.
Chris, a* lie la called bv all who
know him. Is a victim of this rare
disease, and lie was one of the first
persons to lie given a wheel chair
from the proceeds of this drive.
Vntll a few years ago, Chris was
a normal, healthy, happy school
boy. He attended Kuiidav school
regularly at First Baptist church;
he did the" things that all other
fifth graders at Hooker T. Wash-
ington school did; but then Ids legs
starled giving way on him; he Just
coujdn't wulk as far and as long as

cause most children go through nn
awkward and clumsy stage. It was
different with Chris though. He
was eight when his knees started
getting weak, and now at thirteen,
Chris has lost control of both legs,
and his arms have begun to weaken.
There is no pain; not too much
discomfort; but it gets mighty in-
convenient when a fellow of thir-
teen has to arrange hII his activities
from n wheel chair.
It has often been realized that
through trials we find strength.
Chris exhibits that type of strength
in his courage; his patience; and
his faith in Cod. He has made so
many friends through the attitude
to help keep him entertained. A
group of them gave him a lovely
wagon last Christmas. Then there
is another new friend who takes
him on trl|« to the too; provides
home movies for liiin; and just last
week was instrumental in getting
him started In school again.
Chris has had to adjust himself to
a life that, doctors will give no
promise. He Is just thirteen, and he
heads no organizations, nor does he
work on any big job. so how could
he lx» considered as one who serves?
It was John Mljton who said In his
Jmmortnl poem "On His Blindness,"
"They also serve who only stand
and wait."
