San Antonio Election Makes History
UlSTORY was made, Tuesday, when San Antonio
voters—Negro, Latin, and Anglo—elected the
Rev. Samuel H. James to the city council. San Anton-
io thus became the first Texas city, with Tuesday's
election, to elect a Ntgro to its city council, or similar
governing body.
Rev. James was a candidate on the Good Govern-
ment league ticket—that was history-making, too.
The Good Government league has controlled the city
government for the past ten years, has elected its
candidates to office in all elections of the past dec-
ade.
The 1965 election marked the first time that the
GGL selected a Negro as one of its candidates.
San Antonio has taken a giant step forward.
Further progress must follow, will follow. The Ne-
gro's being represented on the city council is prog-
ress, and on tne scholarly shoulders of Rev. James
falls the responsibility of representing the Negro—
and all the citizens—well.
The electorate, black and white, is confident that
he will.
Thomas L. Holley
AS it will to all of us, death has come to Thomas L.
* Holley. Few of us, when our time is up. will have
contributed as much in our particular field, as "Tom"
did in his—the fi<;ld of trades and industrial educa-
tion.
For forty-seven years he labored in that field,
teaching, supervising, projecting, before he retired,
seven years ago. He was "Mr. Vocational Educa-
tion." He worked for it, he developed it, he built it,
be made friends for it in high places.
He aided countless numbers of persons, career-
wise. He became known, admired, respected by thou-
sands. Doors were opened to him any time of day or
night. There were few communities in the once-
largest state in which he was not known and always
welcomed, as he traveled thousands of miles in his
work.
Texas will remember Tom a long, long time.
