National P-TA Stands Up, is Counted
»THE National Parents and Teachers association, at
its annual convention, held in Chicago, several
veeks ago, took significant action about which we
have seen little comment.
The association, with a membership of 12 million,
re?.ponded to the call to take a stand on the civil rights
battle, "and not leave it to others to fight."
In the forefront, for the association to "stand up
and be counted," was a Negro, James R. Stratten, who
is president of the San Francisco, Cal., board of edu-
cation. He exhorted the association delegates to "de-
clare yourselves on all issues concerning youth and
children ... stand up and be counted."
Stratten said further, "This is the proper busi-
ness of the P-TA, the nation's largest organization
ievoted to child welfare. The P-TA cannot sit silently
tn the back row and let other organizations take over
the leadership."
Stratten had been critical of militant Negro or-
ganizations which he accused of exploiting children,
reeding violence, and doing irreparable harm to the
youngsters whom the organizations were allegedly
trying to help.
He received strong support for action by the P-
TA from the outgoing president of the association,
Mrs. Clifford N. Jenkins, Roslyn Heights, Long
Island, New York.
The organization did stand up and was counted.
Almost unanimously the association adopted a reso-
lution which read:
"We believe that some children, because of
their race or color or creed, suffer injustices
and inequality of educational opportunities and
... we are compelled by conscience and convic-
tion to right these wrongs through just and
peaceful solution."
The association also pledged itself to "put forth
greater effort to assure that our constitutional guar-
antees of human dignity, freedom and opportunity
•rill prevail for all children."
The action was the strongest ever taken by the
Hational P-TA on civil rights.
The association stood up, and was counted.
