Tone Down Books
To Satisfy Texas
The New Yorfc publishers of
the textbooks on biology
adopted for use in the Texas
public sell.mis have changed
them s - as to meet with the
approval of the educational
authorities of Texas. Both
firms stated that the altered
texW*>oks were for use in
Texas only.
The word "development"
was substituted for "evolu-
tion" in on- of the books.
Among the d lated passages ;
are:
"Evolution is a slow and :
gradual process."
"All forms are related bv de-
scent from common ancesters.'
"It must be remembered
that the upright position f
man is an acquired position- A
long time ago the ancestors
of man climbed and walked
on all fours."
The publishers also rem ved
a chart depicting man as the
fruit of an immense ev< lution-
ory tree, with protoplasmic
forms of life; as the roots.
In the oth?r bo k the state-
ment that "evolution is a slow
and gradual process and the
skeleton of man is the result
of centuries of development"
was altered to "the sk- leton t
the higher forms of animals
represent many c ntuties i f
development."
Helping Him Along
"Lady, could ye gimme a
quarter to get where me fam-
ily .is "
"Certainly, my p or man.
here is your quarter. Where is
your family?"
"At tie movies."—Exchange.
