Two Years In Retrospect
In the two short years since the first Southwestern
Times was published many things have happened. Momen-
tous years, they were crowded with war, anxiety, victory,
rationing, strikes, peace and reconversion.
Yes, they have been historic years on the national and
world-wide scene. And locally there have been some exciting
moments, too. Most of our boys, like those throughout the
country, have come home from the wars. We saw a huge
building program, both residential and commercial, launched
and then strike-bound, then just recently arrived again. We
have seen a usually stormy political front in West University
even stormier than ever. A tremendous annexation plan was
launched to consolidate most of the Southwestern section
into West University Place which brought bitter opposition
and now has the city in litigation.
We have seen the usually tranquil Bellaire council in a
turmoil over zoning with the final passage of an ordinance
permitting the construction of a big community center on
Old Richmond Road.
A vigorous, though as yet fruitless, drive to educate our
children in adequate buildings was pushed and will doubtless
be in the lime-light again soon.
On the building front the community is indeed one of
the bright spots in the South with McCarthy Center, Shell
Oil Laboratory, The Village expansion, Texas Medical Cen-
ter, plus the construction of hundreds of fine homes and
many modern business establishments.
We are truly proud of the small part we have played in
the development of this progressive section during the last
two years. We are equally cognizant of our responsibility to
you, our readers, in continuing to help promote the health
and prosperous expansion of our community.

Additional Classroom
Two low second rooms at Roberts
School went back on regular sche-
dule Monday after meeting on
double sessions since school start-
ed. Roberts was one of the few
schools in the Houston Independent
School District to receive some
measure of relief from crowded
conditions this year, as a tempor-1
