Enthusiasm, energy abound at PAISD

Shortly after starting my job at
PAISD, my children ask me, "What
is a curriculum/ special programs
coordinator?"
Of course, I answered them with a
very technical, detailed explanation

of curriculum and a lengthy descrip-
tion of special programs. They were
not impressed and even appeared a
little bored. You will be glad to know
that I am going to show mercy and
spare you the tedious details about
curriculum and special programs
and, instead, tell you about what I
get to be a part of everyday.
I have the good fortune of working
with some exceptional people. I am
greeted every morning with a smile
and an optimistic pat on the back.
Karen Pantel's energetic and bubbly
presence sets the tone for my entire
day. As I move out of my office and
onto the campuses, I have the op-
portunity to witness events through
the eyes of an unnoticed observer. I meet the needs of individual stu-
watch high school students practice a dents-. I get to watch the excitement
mittee has been
formed. Mari-

dance to music I enjoyed in college,
(I have a strong urge to tell them to
move out of the way and let me show
them how it is done.) I hear innocent
conversations about weekend plans.
I watch teachers and students interact
with respect and interest. I see third
grade boys open doors for little
girls, straight lines and proud faces
of first graders walking to lunch. I
spot teachers and para-professionals
demonstrating the double Dutch and
hot peppers jump rope games. I meet
kindergarten students who would
rather read than take a nap. I receive
smiles, waves, hugs, and sometimes
a "Hey! I know you."
As the days turn into weeks, I
watch teachers give up their evenings
and their Saturdays to participate in
district activities, attend professional
development training, write lesson
plans, and grade papers. I watch
teachers embrace a brand new cur-
riculum with confidence and vigor as
they deal with the details of manag-
ing something new. I am amazed at
the hard work and commitment of
the PAISD staff. Teachers are taking
on responsibilities to move the three
campuses into a district of one.
Janis Moore has accepted the
responsibility as the district ESL
teacher, and a district L-PAC com-
. and. the buzz.
I catch a glimpse of three very
busy and dedicated administrators
getting it done! Their get-up-and-go
attitude and determination is exciting
to watch and be a part of. However,
there is a down side. I have a ten-
dency to think out loud and learned
early to keep my thoughts to myself.
All I have to do is suggest something
and before I have a chance to notice,
they are working circles around me,
making it happen.
I meet members of the community
who are eagerly sharing their time as
substitute teachers, volunteers, men-
tors, and committee members, and
always with a smile and a genuine
concern for students. Their support
and positive attitude is making an
impact at PAISD.
After 23 years, three states, and
several districts, here I am. I may not
be an expert, but I do believe I have
the experience to know a good place
when I see it. I see a great district
at PAISD. It is a pleasure to be here
and no doubt have the greatest job
in Texas!
PS. An occasional lunch with my
husband isn't a bad deal either.
Gayla Wiggins is curriculum/spe-
cial programs coordinator for the
PAISD.

Who says you have to spend a rainy day cooped up in the house?
