Dicky Neely Blues Band hits Sunset Sounds
An evening of blues is on tap for
Sunset Sounds tomorrow, Friday,
July 14.
The Dicky Neely Blues Band will
perform for Sunset Sounds in the
Patsy Jones Memorial Amphitheater
starting at 7 p.m.
This concert is part of the outdoor
concert series sponsored by the Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation De-
partment. It is free and open to the
public.
The Dicky Neely Blues Band is
primarily a blues outfit playing Chi-
cago style blues with a mix of Delta
blues along with classic rock. Hits of
the '50s and '60s, songs from artists
like Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee
Hooker, Little Walter, Willy Dixon,
Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo and others
are well represented in the group's
repertoire.
Neely leads the group with his har-
monica and vocals. Neely, who lives
in Flour Bluff, spent most of the'70s
in California playing in blues bands,
playing with and getting to listen to
many of the blues greats. He returned
to the Coastal Bend in the late '70s.
Other members of the band are
Fred Jarmon on guitar and vocals,
Eddy Lee Skipwith on bass and
vocals and Antone Perez on drums,
vocals.
Music lovers are invited to bring
a chair or blanket to sit on, a cooler
for a picnic supper and beverages,
and enjoy an evening listening to
blues while watching the sun set and
the dolphins lead ships through the
channel that runs behind the amphi-
theater.

"A Bad Year for Tomatoes" by
John Patrick is a comedy that takes
place in a small New England home
in the village of Beaver Haven.
A famous television actress, Myra
Marlowe, has rented the home for
a year to escape the "craziness" of
Hollywood, and to write her life's
story.
Tom Lamont, her agent, tries to
entice her back to the West Coast to
star in a new TV series.
Local residents are continually
interrupting Marlowe as she attempts
to write her story. The plot involves
scandal, intrigue, suspected murder
and humorous episodes leading up
to a hilarious ending, said actor Jack
Dreessen, who plays Lamont.
The play is suitable for all ages
to enjoy.

Left tern, right tern
This photo of two terns, by Barbara Baird, is one of those that will be on exhibit during First Friday at
the Art Center for the Islands on Friday, July 14. The photo was made through the cooperation of the
landowner, the Texas Nature Conservancy.
First Friday to feature wildlife photos
The First Friday reception tomor-
row, July 14, will feature an exhibit
of winning photographs from the
2005 Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo
Contest.
Refreshments will be served and
live music will be played from 5 to
8 p.m., to entertain attendees as they
peruse the exhibit at the Art Center
for the Islands, 323 N. Alister St.
"We are very fortunate to present
this exhibit - the result of a coopera-
tive effort by landowners who help
preserve the habitat for the wildlife,
and the photographers who capture
them on film," said art center director
Mary Rose.
The sponsor-funded traveling
wildlife exhibit will be on display
during July.
This contest is held every two
years: then the winning photos go
on tour. There is a story behind ev-
ery photo, and the stories are being
used in Wildlife in Focus books, the
traveling Benefactor's Photo Exhibit,
and Kritters 4 Kids school program to
spread public awareness of conserv-
ing wildlife and habitat, said spokes-
man Michelle Horine. The exhibit
travels throughout the 14 counties of
the Coastal Bend.
Top nature photographers from
around the world are lured by the
$90,000 prize money to be shared
with winning landowners. The teams
of photographers and Coastal Bend
ranchers and landowners are given
four months to photograph. Three
world-renowned judges select 159
winning images out of more than
2,300 submitted. Winning photog-
raphers and landowners share the
prize money.
In Texas, 94 percent of land is
privately owned, so that partnership
makes the photographs possible.
"Don't miss out. Come by to view,
order prints and purchase books
through July 28," said Rose. All funds
from this exhibit go to the Coastal
Bend Wildlife Photo Contest.
Corporate sponsors for July are
Charlie and Linda Zahn and the South
Jetty newspaper.

Art Center's
'Third Saturday'
sale set July 15
Enhance someone's life with art
purchased at the Third Saturday
Sale. It will be held from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m., July 15, at the Art Center for
the Islands, 323 N. Alister St.
Art lovers are invited to shop " till
they drop," said art center represen-
tative Maggie Guscott.
While all the art in the gallery
is for sale, shoppers may take ad-
vantage of the discount artists give
on their work for this sale, said
Guscott.
A number of artists discount some
or all of their creations each month
for the sale, which attracts new and
existing clientele.
"Art can brighten anyone's life.
Let us light up your life with a piece
or two bought at this sale for your-
self, or as a gift," said Guscott.
The Art Center for the Islands is a
501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
Call 749-7334 or visit www.

information.
