Bill Hart service
set for Saturday
Services will be held Saturday,
Jan. 20, for legendary angler William
Shelton "Bill" Hart.
Hart, of Port Aransas, died Friday,
Jan. 12, 2007. He was 81.
A memorial service will be held at
Roberts Point Park, Saturday, Jan. 20,
at 4 p.m. In case of bad weather, the
service will be held at the Clines Land-
ing party room, 1000 N. Station St.
s:
Bill Hart
He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in
Spindletop.
When World War II started, Hart
joined the Navy, where he served
from 1942 to 1946.
He then got his captain's license
and started charter fishing. In 1958,
he bought his own boat, the Jenny
Lee, which he lost in Hurricane Carla
in 1961.
Later in 1961, Hart bought La
Gariza (the goose), which he sold
in 1973.
In 1971, Hart began running private
boats.
He was an avid fisherman all his
life. Hart won all major offshore and
inshore tournaments along the Gulf
Coast, including the Port Aransas
Masters, Dean Hawn Invitational,
Texas Champion Billfish Tourna-
ment, Poco Bueno and the Deep Sea
Roundup. Some he won twice, and
he placed second and third in other
tournaments.
The Poco Bueno tournament in
1988 won by Hart, fishing on the Sev-
enth Heaven with owner Hal Tomp-
kins, was special because the win
was all due to Hart. They were kite
fishing with a kite Hart had brought
back from Fort Lauderdale.
Friend Cecilia Fox said, "Bill
was the essence of Port A. With that
Swisher Sweet in his mouth and rod
in his hand is the way he was most
of the time".
An almost-lifelong resident of Port
Aransas and long-time member of the
Port Aransas Boatmen Inc., Hart was
named to the Port Aransas Boatmen's
Association Hall of Fame in 1995.
Hart was always at home at the
helm of a boat and preferred fishing
with women, whom he said listened
to instructions so they caught more
fish.
"Without a doubt he was the most
successful tournament captain in
Port Aransas," said friend Dale
Schroeder.
Superstitious, Hart had clothes he
thought were lucky and wore them
whenever people were supposed to
catch fish.
Also in the superstitious vein, he
did not allow people to take bananas
aboard his boats.
As a ship's captain, Hart was
known to "perform miracles", keep-
ing his boats going with practically
nothing, and had an uncanny knack
for knowing what was on a line, said
Penny Slingerland of the man who
captained a boat for her and former
husband Reed McFadden.
"He could catch fish anywhere;
the jetties, offshore'and in the bays,"
Slingerland said.
The Bill Hart Grand Slam Billfish
Tournament, an "all release" tourna-
ment, was created before his death by
a gift given by the late Curt Johnson
and his wife Cathy on behalf of Get
Reel Fish Catchers to honor Hart, a
"true Texas billfisherman".
"Hart forgot more about fishing
these waters than most of us will ever
know. He touched lives from Texas to
Florida to Belize to Isla Mujeras and
all ports in between. To know Bill
Hart was to love Bill Hart," said those
who knew him best.
Six sisters preceded Hart in death.
Survivors include two daugh-
ters, Shirley (Mickey) Hart Yates
of Aransas Pass and Barbara Gail
(Ralph) Robbins of Portland; one
sister, Wanda Joy Holmquist of Cleve-
land; a goddaughter, Peggy McCarty,
of Rockport; four grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations to
the Captain Bill Hart Scholarship
are encouraged, in care of Penny
Slingerland, Port Aransas 1SD, 100 S.
Station, Port Aransas, TX 78373.

Getting past bad habits
If you are perfect, please stop
reading and go to the next article. No
- do not read, if you are perfect.
Ok, now that it is only us imperfect
people reading, we can continue.
What hurt, habit or hang-up is con-
stantly messing you up? You know,
that thing that you say isn't a problem
and you will stop next week...but
next week never comes. You are
still doing it. You want to stop, you
promised that this would be the year
that you'd stop, you even asked God
(maybe even told God) that you
would stop.. .but you haven't.
Proverbs 14:12 NLT There is a
path before each person that seems
right, but it ends in death.
Somewhere, long ago, we went
down that path that seemed right.
Our friends told us it was okay. Ev-
erybody was doing it, but now we are
trapped, and we see that it definitely
could end in death. What can we do
to get out?
Many of you are familiar with AA
(Alcoholics
Anonymous)
or other simi-
lar programs.
They are great.
As a matter of
fact, we have
a good local
chapter at the
Episcopal
church in Port
Aransas. If
you currently
attend, please
do not stop at-
tending your
group.
I do want to let you know about
a program that First Baptist Church
in Port Aransas is starting on Friday
night, Feb. 2. A free meal is served
at 6 p.m., and the program begins
at 7 p.m. It is called Celebrate
Recovery.
What makes this different fromn
other recovery programs is that it is
William
Campbell
not just for substance abuse issues.
Here are some of the issues that
can be dealt with through Celebrate
Recovery: Overworking, overeat-
ing, alcohol/drugs, overspending,
grief, guilt, anger/rage, fear/anxiety,
divorce, abuse, sexual addictions,
codependency, insecurity, perfec-
tionism, hypochondria, hurtful rela-
tionships, gambling, lying, procras-
tination and the need to control.
If you can identify with any of
these issues (or other issues in life),
then Celebrate Recovery is for you.
In CR, we begin to understand that
we need God's help to overcome our
issues. When we turn to him, He
gives us His grace. What is grace?
Grace is the power to change, and
that is what we need...unless you
are perfect!
James 4:6 NIV "God opposes
the proud but gives GRACE to the
humble."
William Campbell is pastor at First
Baptist Church of Port Aransas.
