Students watch as an LCD projector beams a lesson on a screen
during a world history class at Port Aransas High School. The Port
Aransas Independent School District recently bought nine new
LCD projectors and might buy more soon.
Technology gets a lift
By Dan Parker
South Jetty reporter
Freshly installed LCD projectors
and other new equipment are helping
teachers educate students through
technology more than ever in Port
Aransas schools.
Nine new LCD projectors, good
for making PowerPoint presenta-
tions, were set up in classrooms on all
three campuses of the Port Aransas
Independent School District in Oc-
tober and November. The district
previously had 10 projectors, said
Leif Johnson, the district's technol-
ogy coordinator.
Working with screens about 6
by 7 feet in size, the projectors can
display, in color, photos, video foot-
age, written quizzes and much more.
Anything that can be downloaded
on a computer can immediately be
projected on the screens.
The projectors cost about $2,000
apiece, including installation.
School officials said the projectors
are valuable teaching tools partly
because they keep students' attention,
breaking up what otherwise might be
a day-long series of lectures.
Pete Barello, who teaches world
history and other subjects at PAHS,
has had a projector in his classroom
since before the new shipment of
projectors. He has used his projector
for many lessons. Some of the video
he has shown in history lectures has
really grabbed students' attention,
he said.
"The one that shocks them the
most is the video clip of the planes
hitting the World Trade Center tow-
ers," Barello said. "That will stop
them in their tracks, That, and the
Zapruder film of Kennedy being as-
sassinated."
PAISD might buy about 25 more
projectors in the not-too-distant
future, according to Superintendent
Billy Wiggins. That would put a
projector in all of the remaining class-
rooms that don't have them now.
The projectors are a "fairly high
priority" for the district, Wiggins
said. "Technology is one of those
things - if you don't keep moving in
the right direction, you get behind,"
he said.
The PAISD Board of Trustees
will decide when to purchase the
next round of projectors. Trustees
this spring will consider buying the
projectors, plus 10 supplemental
audio systems for the projectors, at
a total cost of about $55,000, Wig-
gins said.
Not all teachers are using the
projectors as much as they could,
school officials said. Johnson said he
is working on getting teachers better
trained to use the equipment.
The projectors aren't the only new
technology at PAISD.
Obtained through a grant provided
by KEDT in 2006, teachers now
can use a computer program called
Chalkwaves for classroom instruc-
tion. Through a new computer server
and a new UHF antennae installed
on top of the high school last spring,
the program constantly is being
refreshed with new educational vid-
eos. Teachers at all three campuses
can look through a menu of pos-
sibilities and decide which videos
they'd like to show their students.
Material in the videos are corre-
lated with TEKS - Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills - the state's
set of standards for academic abili-
ties students should acquire in public
schools.
The school district also spent about
$75,000 this past spring upgrading
the district's servers and other com-
puter equipment.

Third grade is one
of the most challeng-
ing, yet rewarding,
grades of the entire
elementary school
experience. (Yes, we
are partial!)
Students come to
us as little 8-year-
olds who in six
months must pass
the TAKS reading
test that will deter-
mine if they go on to the next grade
level.
"Wow," you might be thinking,
"that's a lot of pressure for a little
kid!"
Honestly, we agree with your
thinking!
One of our goals as third grade
teachers is to make this transition as
smooth and as painless as possible
for students and parents. We hope to
accomplish this by first instilling in
our students that The Test is not what
third grade is all about, but is just the
icing on the cake for a year spent in
feeding their brains with knowledge
and thinking skills. Yes, we do
practice important test-taking skills,
but this is a small part of our curricu-

Substitute training set
Training for those wanting to sub-
stitute teach in the Port Aransas In-
dependent School District (PAISD)
will be held Monday, Jan. 29.
The training will be conducted at
PAISD administration building, 100
Station St., from 9 to 11 a.m.
Training will cover such topics
as the substitute teacher's role in
curriculum, classroom management,
communications and a state-mandat-
ed section on sexual harassment.
Special programs coordinator
Gayla Wiggins of PAISD will
conduct the substitute training.
Anyone wishing to substitute
teach in the Port Aransas schools
must complete the training before
being assigned. However, if the sub-
stitute teacher attended the training
session last year, it is not necessary
to retake it.
PAISD substitute teachers are paid
on a per day basis. The rate of pay is
based on the level of education the
substitute teacher has attained.

lum. We believe
if students are
presented with
varied learning
experiences, and
if the teachers,
students and par-
ents are giving
100 percent, The

care of itself.
Secondly, we
nurture the child
and build a relationship of mutual
respect. This relationship is estab-
lished by appropriate praise, positive
reinforcement, and a structured envi-
ronment where clear expectations are
known by all.
Lastly, we set high but attainable
goals for each student. Kids need to
know they can do anything if they
work hard and set their minds to it!
Our favorite part of the year is
watching these kids grow in mind,
body and spirit. Do we expect a lot?
Yes. Do we love these kids? Yes.
Is our job hard? Yes. Do, we love
it? You bet!
