DEATH NOTICE
Edson Lee Thomas of A Co., 495th AFA,
passed away suddenly after suffering a heart
attack. He is survived by his wife, Rita.
Armored
Artillery
Well!! You 494th Hellcats have
certainly let us down again. You
didn't attend the wonderful re-
union in Cleveland this year, and
not many of you keep us posted
on "what the action is" with you.
You saw by the last HELLCAT
NEWS that only four of the 494th
registered in Cleveland. It is like-
ly that a few others came for a
short time, but just did not sign
on the dotted line at the registra-
tion desk. We were fortunate to
stay in the gracious home of Eve-
lyn and David Glontz during the
reunion.
After my wife Lucy and I re-
turned from Cleveland, we drove
on to Florida, as far down as
Cape Kennedy. We visited relat-
ives, saw the sights, and were
hard-put to return to the salt min-
es after so much leisure.
What a pleasant experience we
had the last week in August!
John and Dot Clark came by to
spend a couple of days with us
on their way home. They had been
on an extended tour, including
the tables of Las Vegas, since
leaving the Cleveland reunion.
We called Vernon and Sarah
Wats; they came over, and the
Clarks, Wates, and Davises rode
down to the Grand Strand-Myrtle
Beach-to wrap up details for the
1970 convention. We were treated
royally and were invited to have
dinner on the house. The food
was tantalizing, filling and fatten-
ing. The Convention dates are
July 23-26, 1970, and you'll be
hearing more about the exciting
plans, including special treats for
the teenagers. Myrtle Beach is
the "Fun Capital" of the South &
at night closely resembles Las
Vegas. During the year, work
hard, save your money, and next
summer bring the family for fun
and frolic.
Later, you fellows of the 494th,
wherever you are, will be hear-
ing from me, but until then, pay
your dues, send me any news,
and think, "1970 Convention, Myr-
tle Beach, South Carolina." Don't
be afraid of South Carolina; we
rejoinsd the Union several years
back. When you come next sum-
mer, we will try to lay out the
red carpet of southern hospitality
for y'all, including grits for Jack
Miller.

1 st Vice President Report
by Dave Golden
We may be on the threshold
of cur Silver Anniversary year,
and I've proclaimed the coming
membership year as "The Gold-
en Year" because I've great faith
in the members ability to exceed
the membership totals of the past
year. Dave, in estimating a pro-
jected figure, I've hopes of ex-
ceeding the 1600 mark by the end
of this membership year.
Nothing that the annual mem-
bership increases have been ex-
traordinary since Bob Saehloff in-
troduced the BIMI award three
years ago, Dave has again an-
nounced a trophy award will be
made for this year's winner.
This trophy, BIMI IV, will pro-
bably be well earned since the
momentum of the membership
competition has reached a great
velocity and each and every unit
is in there fighting for recognit-
ion.
The conversations eminating
from the unit meeting rooms in
Cleveland indicated that a drive
will be made for more and more
donations by current members
for sponsorships. This, as we are
finding out, is the life blood of
our association and the key to
our growth. If each current mem-
ber sponsored just one new mem-
ber, we'd certainly bring about
the dream of a "Golden Year"
in memberships.

ecutive Council.

Another month gone and Fall
is here. Harvest is nearly done
here in North Dakota and a real
fine crop was taken off. Now to
get ready for the long, cold win-
ter.
Received a letter from Salva-
dore Delagardo, 5070 So. 4420 W.
Kearns, Utah 84118. He is work-
ing for the U.S. Smelting and
Mining Co. and would like to hear
from his old Army Buddies.
John Moleski, also of B Co.,
dropped me a line. Everything is
well in Kingston, Pa. and he sends
his best wishes to the gang.
Sure hope Charles Lorenz and
Herb Arenz have recovered from
the reunion. Don't forget Herb
that you promised me a letter
on how things are in LaCrosse.
Wise.
Vern Wates is on the reunion
committee for 1970. The reunion
in Myrtle Beach, S. C. really
sounds exciting. Imagine a hotel
completely reserved for HELL-
CATS on the Atlantic.
It is again time to pay your
yearly dues. When you send in
those dues please write a few
lines on the return envelope for
me. This column needs your help.
