Idus Cleveland [17th AIB] left, and Julius E. Bernstein [Div. Hq.-G5]
in Denver, CO, Aug. 18, 1984. Idus was originally with Div. Grps.
Ray Dodge (Div Hq/CCA) sends
dues, includes booster and a newsy
letter regarding himself. Sent
from Anchorage, Alaska, Ray tells
us that his reason for moving there
was strictly based on economics.
He writes . . . My last residence
was in Oregon which has not heard
about the new economic recovery,
if such a thing is a true fact. Since
the collapse of the wood products
industry in the northwest, due to
the lack of demand for housing
construction lumber, the remain-
der of the state's economy has
withered also. So when the en-
gineering company, I am now
associated with said they had a
spot for me in their Anchorage
office and they would pay for
moving expenses, I made up my
mind fast. It was a good feeling to
be wanted again, especially at my
age. If I don't want any more
winters here, I can opt for early
retirement next year and move to
California or Arizona. My son who
teaches art subjects at Ohio State
University has been with Phyllis
and me for a couple of weeks of his
summer hiatus. We just returned
from a few days at Denali National
Park where we were awed by the
true magnificance of Mt. McKinley
(over 20,000 ft - four miles high)
and seeing grizzley bears, caribou,
moose, red fox, dalls sheep and
other fauna from the roads. In-
cidently, Denali Park is larger
than the state of Massachusetts so
nobody is going to see it in one
weekend. Ray closes with . . .
Should any of the CCA gang care
to visit, we have a spare room for
you.
A letter received from John
Melfi (Div Hq/CCB), writing from
Columbus, Ohio, tells us that he
drops a line to let all know that he
and wife Betty are still around and
thank God enjoying good health
and six grand children. Glad to see
some of my ole buddies names in
the column. I try to picture them
as they were and as they are now.
The only guys that I have seen
since the war was Nick Glumac at
the Minneapolis reunion several
years ago and Slim Dunlavy who
passed through Columbus with his
family a few years back. Dunlavy
and I exchange Christmas greet-
ings each year and we catch up on
the latest between our families.
We were very good friends while
in the service and we will remain
that way. The days are getting a
little chilly now and that gets
Betty and John thinking of Florida,
so it won't be long til we will be
leading south. John closes with
Hi and God Bless to all his ole
buddies and wishes all the best of
health. Included with his letter
was a most interesting article that
appeared in a September issue of
the Columbus Dispatch. Written
by an associated press reporter, it
was contained in a "Science Briefs"
section. The entire article featured
Dr. Brandan Phibbs (Div Hq/CCB)
and deals with pacemaker technol-
ogy and the implanting of pace-
makers. John comments that he
remembers Dr. Phibbs as a good
doctor and gentleman who cared
for the men under his care. I am
sure that when other men of CCB
read this, they will remember him.
From St. Louis, Mo. dues, with
booster and news comes from Col.
George Mueller (Ret.) (Div Hq).
He writes ... So sorry to be tardy
with my dues as we have been
doing a lot of travelling. One stop
was overnight at Fort Campbell
and we were surprised to see the
placemats and also a page in the
menus giving the history of the
12th. The next day we visited the
museum. I was assigned to the
Division in September 1944 in
Epinal, France from the 6th Army
Group in Paris to serve in Military
Intelligence G-2 headquarters and
billeted with the MP's. How well I
remember interrogating the first
prisoners that we took ... even his
name (1st Lt. Werner Popp, a
native of Wurzburg). Our summer
was spent in Michigan at Glen
Lake. It was wonderful as our
grand children who live in Califor-
nia were with us. I am 'recouping'
from surgery and doing fine. This
was my first hospital stay - so I
have been very fortunate. I am
anxiously awaiting getting back on
the golf course during these beau-
tiful fall days. We really enjoy the
HCN and look forward to attend-
ing the next reunion. Our wish is
healthy happy days to you all and
God Bless.
We welcome a new member,
located by our Membership Chair-
man Warren Maue (A/17 AIB). He
is W. T. DeBright (Div Hq). W. T.
was a Staff Sergeant assigned to
the tank platoon that included the
Commanding Generals tank.
Also this month we received
news of the death of another
Hellcat. He is Harry L. Hill, Sr.
and served with Division Head-
quarters. Notice of his death was
passed on to us by Bob Saehloff
(Sv/495 AFA). Harry's home is in
Kingston, N.Y. where Bob also
makes his home. The Division
Group along with the entire asso-
ciation extend our deepest sym-
pathy to his family.
ETCETERA . . . We learned
recently via notice in the Sporting
News that Jimmie Reese (Div
Hq/SSO) had suffered a mild
coronary. Feeling that it was

Many of our ole buddies have de-
serted us, as they have paid no
dues after we carried them for
several years on Boosters from
you. If the dues are creating a
hardship, please let you Unit Rep,
or your Executive Secretary know,
and we will continue to send you
the Hellcat News, till you notify us
differently. This is what the
BOOSTER money is for. We
intentionally drop no one, but why
can't you write us something? If
you don't want to be a member
anymore, write us, before your
buddies pay your dues for two
years. Remember, you are only
boosted once, so if your buddies
mean nothing to you anymore, say
so.
Ray Ronnie, Sv., who was with
us in Denver, suffered a heart
attack, one week after he returned
home. He made it through, and is
still with us, leaving the hospital
Sept. 10,1984. News was given me
by Tilford Julson, of the 493rd, of
possible that he could have been
home, we put through a telephone
call and talked to him. I called him
a couple of times since and am
happy to report that he is coming
along fine and wants to be remem-
bered to all.
The list of those in the group
who have not renewed is indeed
alarming. There are many, many,
many. And ironically among those
still unsigned are some of my
buddies and close associates. I
hope that in the next issue of the
HCN, I will be able to list ALL OF
YOU as having come forward.
