I am confused. Here I thought I was
way ahead of the game, and I get a letter
from Ken Warnes saying that copy for
November must be to him by October 28,
and I am planning on leaving for our
annual trip to daughter at White Plaines,
N.Y. Friday. And on top of it all, I have
enough news to fill the News myself.
Here goes and I hope it makes sense to
all of you.
First, two very sad notes. Ken's note
of October 3 stated that General Brewer
passes away September 29 and was
buried in Arlington, Monday, October 3.
I am sure there will be a detailed story
on this elsewhere in the news, but my
meeting with the General at Springfield
was unforgetable. He was a real
gentleman. Our heartfelt sympathy to
the family.
Then Ken's note of October 10
included a letter from May L. Babcock
informing him of the passing of her
husband, Vincent L. Babcock on August
19,1976. She wrote the letter September
27, on the receipt of his paid-up dues
card for 1976-77. May served in the Navy
and they were married shortly after his
discharge from the Army and her
discharge from Navy. I quote her last
paragraph, "I have kept the membership
card because I want to keep it with my
treasured possessions and a reminder of
my husband's outstanding service to his
country." Such love and respect — we
need much more of it, in our world today.
Vince was a very good friend of mine,
and had a fine tenor voice. I will never
forget the Christmas program at
Campbell, our 1st Christmas in service.
He sang, "White Christmas" and it was
tops. I personally want to extend my
sympathy to May and I am sure the rest
of you join me. I am always too late with
too little. I had planned to give Vince a
call on my trip to daughters, as Butler,
N.J. is not too far from my route
through New Jersey to White Plaines.

Charles G. Gross, 21 Waping Road,

booster. Welcome all of you. Of course
most are reregister, but a couple are 1st
timers.
I fought myself as to whether or not to
take up all the space with addresses, but
my better self won out. I figured maybe
one of you would want to get in touch
with one of your old buddies.
Now for the ones that included some
news.
John Carlson says, "Hope to make '77
or '78 reunion." He also mentioned the
death of Lt. Herring in January, 1976.
Per John — he joined 12th at Campbell
and left the 12th for pilot school. Bill
Cuneo says "Retired after 32 years with
Southern Pacific R.R. at age 60, July 1,
1974. Have made two long trips with
Pensioners to Lake Louise, Canada in
1975 and Mt. Rushmore in 1976." Staab
wrote a nice letter to Ken Warnes and
extended his hearty greetings "to all his
buddies in HQ's, A-B-C and Service
Batteries". He made mention of Buck
Jones being very near him on his trip,
when he was at McPherson, Kan. Buck
take note — Staab sure would have loved
to have seen you. Remember, stop and
see him next time. He also recalled the
trouble Glen Osterhaut had, keeping in
step on the march. Staab said he told you
to watch the guy in front of you — at his
neck. And you replied, "He needs a
haircut." He sent a special greeting to
John H. Babcock and John Carlson. Says
he and wife and two boys are getting
along O.K. He had back surgery in 1965,
but is doing fine now. And he wants
some of his buddies to get in touch with
him. Harold Hershey says "still in good
health and things are normal". Good luck
to all. (I thought you were going to make
Springfield?) Walt (Velma) Liskow says
"Will write news to Unit Rep". Where is
the letter? Louis Lapinski says about
missing reunion — as I stated
previously. I go to Cheyenne, Wyoming,
Frontier Rodeo each year at time of
reunion. He displays and sells Western
Hats. I appreciate all the notes, but for
this month the following is my favorite.
Old friend Stan Banaszak came through.
He said "Sorry I missed the Springfield
Reunion, because of other plans. It sure
would have been nice to see all my
buddies. I hope next year, God Willing
all goes well, I would like to attend
reunion. Hi, Joe Boland, Mel Farrand,
Julson, Wates, Sunell plus all the others.
If you are in the neighborhood, "stop in".
Like money from home, sure good to
hear from you, Stan, now send me more
news. Passero said he received letters
from Ralph Lattig and Lawson HIggins
and he intends to answer them. Says he
is retired from Columbus Fire Dept. for
8 months and plays a lot of golf.
Challenge him, Joe. Says he does a little
maintenance work to pay for the golf
balls. He won't get to do the other thing
he intended to do, as he said he was
going to look up General Brewer. John
Towle said, Sorry I couldn't make the
reunion this time, but wish to say Hi to
all his old buddies from Service Btry.
Hopes to make next reunion for sure. In
case any one has trouble remembering
him, he says he was Service Btry cook at
Campbell and overseas. He sends
everyone his Best Regards. Well, that
covers the dues and notes. Boy, that was
a bunch and was sure good to hear from
all of you.
Ken Warnes explained that reason he
omitted the names of Paul Zanieski and
Robert Mixell from the attendance list,
was they were not registered. Paul sent
his dues this month. Now we would like
to hear from you, Bob. How about it.
Thanks.
Marion Davenport and Hannah
phoned us a week or two ago. Seems
they were afraid their Hellcat News had
got lost. I had just gotten my copy, so I
told them to wait another week and then
if not received, let me know. Didn't hear
from them again, so I guess they got it. I
think now that Ken Warnes is settled in
Kirkland, Wash. Things will roll along
again real smooth. Eh what, Ken old
chap? Thanks a lot, Marion and Hannah,
for the call. Do it again.
In today's mail, I received dues of
William W. Wright (A) 2429 Cambridge
Street, East Meadow, N.Y. 10115. This
was in reply to the efforts of the "A"
Battery gang who have started to try to
find all the old buddies. Sure nice to have
you aboard, Bill. This should give
Dorrell Moore and the other guys a
feeling of reward for their efforts.
Boy, I can't get used to doing these
things so far ahead. I watched the third
game of the World Series tonight (How
about our REDS?) and if I don't wish you
a Very Merry Christmas now, I'll miss
out. Tillie and I wish all of you the very
best of Christmas and all through the
year. Especially God's Blessings.
Editor's Butt In: Thanks to Ray
Billings (SV/43rd) of Kansas City,
Kansas for his great help in calling
William A. Cox one of the names on
Dorrell Moores (A) list of names your
Unit Rep sent to me, and who I sent a
Hellcat News and Dues envelope. I did
receive on Oct. 28th a check for Bill's
dues and welcome aboard Bill and Ray
Billings we still love ya. One more great
did by a Hellcat, "Who's Next??"
