HELLCAT NEWS
May 1990
George and can relate any de-
tails about his service. Write or
call Lawrence Schumaker, 7801
El Manor, Los Angeles, CA
90045.
We have a good record in the
research department so I hope
that we can succeed again.
Carl Lyons wrote that his
wrists are beginning to get the
"golfers twitch" while he is
waiting to get on the links. I
have a golfers joke that I will
have to tell you at the reunion
Carl. He also asked if he should
bring some copies of his diary
to Charlotte. That would be
great and it would be neat if
any of you who have pictures
or diaries would bring them
along.
All I have ever asked is that
you make every effort to get to
the reunion and here is a Hell-
cat doing just that. Nick Bart-
ushintz, SV., will be there if at
all possible. He retired but was
asked to return to work as a
consultant and has been very
busy. He now is convinced that
youth cannot replace exper-
ience. As I heard the adage,
Nick, it said, "Youth and
energy will never beat oldage
and running."
Well, well, greed rears it's
ugly head. Paul Moore, Hq, was
going to take life easy, so what
is he doing? He and Donna are
helping a friend at a mobile
home sales lot, decorate and
clean units. They have manag-
ed to make a couple of trips to
Florida the past winter. They
just bought a 23' pull camper
and are putting it into shape.
As he says, the 12th spirit
drives him to do the work right.
Paul asks about camper areas
close to Ft. Knox for the July
10 anniversary celebration. I
don't know the answer. Maybe
you can afford some help.
Do you have that friend that
should be one of our officers?
Now is your chance to place
names in the hands of the
nominating committee. Send
your entry (if you are sure he
would accept nomination) to
Julius Carl Tervay, PO Box
11027, Spring, Texas 77391.
Flashback time!! From 56th
Halftrack Nov. 4, 1943. A little
humor? Corporal: "Boy am I
scared! Just got a letter from a
man telling me he'll shoot me
if I don't stay away from his
wife." Sergeant: "Well, why
don't you?" Corporal: "He
The army promised you
clothes. They didn't say
they would fit. Jack Priest-
ly, C/17 at Camp Blanding,

I haven't had any hate letters
yet after the April fool article
but here is one rep. that is
"hanging it up." Bernard Rice,
82nd Med., is passing the torch
to his back-up, Merle McNamee.
Thanks to Bernard for helping
make the H. C. N. the fine
magazine it is.-
Norb Bruemmer sends along
a bit of good news. He assures
us that if we can keep up the
pace of new memberships we
will more than offset the deaths
that we are experiencing. That
should tell us that we need to
search for and urge new re-
cruits.
The association has 533 life-
time Membership's and that
number indicates that more
are going to the type of member-
ship. Certainly erases the
chance forgetting dues.
We have another request for
information for all you encyc-
lopedias of knowledge. Norb
Bruemmer received a letter
from Lawrence Schumaker,
brother of P. F. C. George L.
Schumaker of A Company. He
stated that George was killed
near Herrlisheim. Lawrence
has several questions that I
won't list, but he would appreci-
ate hearing from anyone who
knows anything about his
brother. Please contact him if
you were acquainted with
Bad Omen. B/17 halftrack in Heidenheim. Who were
Blondy, Peggy, and Ruby on the vehicle? Picture by Gro-
ver Cunningham Sv/17.
didn't sign his name."
I don't want you guys com-
plaining about my jokes.
Have I mentioned the Char-
lotte reunion recently? Start
tearing out those reservation
forms in the H. C. N. They were
put there just for you.
It has been a long time since
we have heard from Nebraska
but here are greetings for
Ogallala and the Preitauers, B,
John and Wannaleen. John
retired from the U. S. Postal
Service (is that why the mail
service has gone down the
tubes?), but has been able to
keep busy. Wannaleen had
some serious surgery some time
ago, and since then John has
become quite the housekeeper
and nurse. They have been able
to do some traveling in their
Dodge van to visit their daugh-
ter and family in Ogden, Utah.
For those who have been
wondering about Pat Mar-
cotulli, wonder no more. Just
get to Charlotte because there
is a good chance that he and
Rene will be there. He sends
his best to all the Hellcats.
C Company, you have a new
lifetime member in your midst.
Richard Franks is now known
as "ole" number 526. Welcome
to the growing group of life-
timers Richard.
Not to be outdone, Company
A boasts a recruit to the lifetime
club. We are pleased to have
"ole" 525 James Welton signed,
sealed, and delivered.
Glen and Donna Cleland were
among the northerners who
defected to Florida this year but
they missed the cold so they
went back to Indiana for Christ-
mas just in time to help their
son move. That is not exactly
good planning Glen.
You claim that your golf has
improved this winter Glen, but
are you ready to brag about it?
The Clelands seldom stay
home so they missed Jim Lotz
when he came calling. Better
luck next time Jim. Sounds like
you need a reservation. If you
want to ask Glen about his golf,
or Donna about her bowling
you can do that at the Adams
Mark Hotel in Charlotte.
Now I have heard everything.
Pea Pickers I can understand,
but TOAD LICKERS? Gesin is
trying to protect the 12th so he
sent an article on the dangers
of "toad licking." Seems that it
is a new way to get high oh a
drug called bufotenine. Come
now Robert, what are you going
to tell us next? I guess anything
is possible in Miami. You can
stay there where 63% of the
motorists are uninsured and
you can only water between
4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. I'll stay
in Colorado where I can water
most anytime.
Now, here is a mid-American
Hellcat who has his "ducks in
a row." Jack and Audrey Priest-
ly have already made reser-
vations for the picnic in Em-
poria. Hope that he is a horse-
shoe pitcher who can hold up
the 17th. And what else does
he do that is so neat? He makes
plans for Charlotte. Jack writes
that he joined the 17th in
March of '45 and was assigned
as "buddy" to Harold (Red Dog)
Floyd. After V-E Day. He was
assigned to the 86th div. but
they were on their way to Japan
