Since there appears to have been some confusion within our
membership about the status of our collection in the museum in
Abilene, this month's column is being devoted to dealing with some
points in question.
As you have read elsewhere, this semester is different for Dr.
Williams. The university's administration has relieved him of
teaching duties in order to give him the time to raise the necessary
money to bring our 12th ADA Museum into reality. There has also
been hired a new assistant director of the 12th's history project,
Mrs. Robbi McClure. However, this semester there are no students
available for working on our project.
What this means in particular is that Dr. Williams is devoting
every possible hour to securing financing for our museum, but also,
there are no "free hands" for reproducing pictures, documents, etc.,
as was originally offered. Whatever materials have been sent to
ACU at an earlier time are safe, well cared for, and catalogued. If,
however, your materials were to be reproduced and returned to you
and have not yet been, then either continue to be patient or ask to
have your property returned so that you can reproduce them
yourself.
Abilene Christian University's president, Dr. Royce Money, has
now signed a letter to the 12th ADA president, Ted Blostein,
verifying the university's intent to support the 12th ADA Museum
in Abilene. In addition to supporting the museum, the university is
now formally obligated to preserve, protect, and maintain the
integrity of the 12th's collection. The agreement pledges total coop-
eration with the association and/or its designated successors.
It is now crucial for each Hellcat to assist (1) in raising the
required money within one year's time to build the museum and
then afterwards (2) to raise an endowment to maintain the museum
properly for generations to come. As a result of a request from the
12th ADA to provide a contingency plan, if in the future some
unforeseen situation would cause the museum to close, the collec-
tion would be passed on intact to another responsible museum.
In the meantime, if any Hellcat or Hellcat family has a particular
question concerning memorabilia already donated to the museum,
it is sincerely requested that you direct your questions or concerns
not to an association officer, but to George Hatt or Marian Miller,
co-chairmen of the ACU Liaison Committee. We pledge to you that
a proper response will be sent your way as soon as we can arrive at
the best answer or solution.
Families who have not yet sent their donations to Dr. Williams
are earnestly requested to send their contributions soon.
Together we can make our museum an enviable reality.
Memorial Museum Project Needs
MAP FILING CABINETS
LEGAL FILING CABINETS
To lower the costs for the Memorial Museum, the 12th AD
Historical Project needs donations of these two kinds of filing
cabinets, new or used. If you have or know where the 12th AD
Historical Project can acquire these kinds of filing cabinets,
please notify Dr. Vernon Williams in Abilene. These filing
cabinets are needed to hold the growing collection of 12th AD
historical materials arriving in Abilene. When the Memorial
Museum Project is completed, all historical materials and the
cabinets will be transferred to the Museum building.
