like us all to consider the women in the association and those we
think should be singled out for their contributions to the division
units and the division itself.
Catching up on some notes included with holiday cards: Don
Hale [HQ1 wrote that last Oct. he and his wife, Henrietta, visited
with Bill and Patsy Jones [BJ at their home in Redding, CA. "We
enjoyed the hospitality and had a great tour of the Lassen National
Forest where Bill used to be the Ranger in charge. The 12th
Armored experience certainly resulted in many precious and long-
term friendships."
In a card from Julie and Chet Andrzejczak [AJ they included
their annual year-end wrap-up of their lives for the previous year.
In 1997, they wrote, "It's been a full year." About their attendance
at the reunion in Columbus, they said, "As we met the gang from
the 12th Armored, it was obvious most are in their 70s and 80s,
survivors, who are feeling blessed that the Lord has allowed them
to stay around as long as they have. It's with those thoughts we
praise and give thanks each day for family and friends who we try
to keep in touch with over the holidays."
The card Elmer Bright [HQJ sent included a little history. "I
thought I should share a little history of the fighting 56th Armored
Infantry Battalion, (which) captured the first German city by units
of the 12th Armored Division, and it was the first battalion to reach
the Rhine River as part of Patton's 3rd Army." Those are milestones
we shouldn't forget, although I was not aware of them until I got
Elmer's note over the holidays.

necessary work involved to keep going, a little less paper work
helps." It also helps all the unit reps who have to keep track of who
has paid, who hasn't, what category a member is listed under, etc.
Jim Czarnecki [A], who keeps in touch from his outpost in
Eugene, OR, says his "new knee is working great," and his health
has improved quite a bit. Jim's health problems kept him from the
reunion in Columbus last Aug. "The year of '98 is upon us and I
hope it will be better than '97," Jim wrote. He says he is looking
forward to his chapter meeting and also the national reunion in
Houston. His wife, Lois, is also doing well "and so are my kids."
Bob Payne [B-92], chairman of the Woman of the Year Com-
mittee, is seeking as many valid nominations as possible. He would

Company, in DiIIingen, May 11,1945. Pic by Oakes
He also wrote, in again urging to include as much information as
known in any Hellcat's obituary, that a "death notice doesn't do
justice to any man who paid the price of being a doughboy. There
were some great soldiers and officers in the 56th Battalion and time
should not dim the glory of their deeds." He also noted there are
"only a few officers left of the company commanders and staff who
went over on the 'Empress of Australia'." Elmer had some addi-
tional history of the 56th in a letter received shortly before this
issue's deadline, and I'll include it in the next issue of the HCN. He
is in Sarasota for the winter, and his health has improved.
Marv Rowland [B], our past president and a long-time 56th unit
rep, sent a thick sheaf of papers he received from Bob Beach [BJ,
the former CO of B Company. One of the items is dated Jan. 26,
1945, and it pertains to the awarding of the Bronze Star Medal to
Beach. The official general orders said, "Burnett B. Beach,
01290364, captain, infantry, Company B, 56th Armored Infantry
Battalion, for meritorious service on 10 Dec. 1944, in the vicinity
of Bining, France. When in an assembly area, his company was
subjected to a heavy artillery barrage which wounded several men.
Captain Beach immediately estimated the situation and, without
regard for his personal safety, personally supervised the evacuation
of the company vehicles from this assembly area without further
