to Bob Head. Get busy fellows, let's have some nominations.
Robert Nochengost [A] wants to hear from some of the guys in
the machine gun squad, 1st Platoon. Address: 207 Norwood Dr.,
Colonial Hgts, VA 23834.
Jeep and Betty Camarata [HQ] have been up north again. This
time by train. They enjoyed Christmas with the family, especially the
grandchildren, and spent New Years in NC. They heard from Nancy
Myhre. She is still doing charity work in San Bernardino, CA.
Ed and Mary Etta [HQ] aren't feeling well. We hope for a better
'98 for them.
Marie and Dr. Lee Ghormley [HQ] are keeping young by
staying busy.
Chuck Brown [HQ] keeps his mail coming to Jeep and Betty
and keeps them informed about what's happening on the west coast.
Bird watchers, Sig and Betty Strangeland, spent their holidays
in Scottsdale, AZ. Jeep could only listen to their phone call on
another phone because of throat surgery. He's OK now.
Charles and Doris Evans [HQ] are doing pretty well. They
need to go down and see Jeep and Betty - haven't seen each other
for three years.
The disturbing news is Richie Amato [HQ] lost his wife, Anna,
of 53 years. She was one sweet lady and will be sorely missed. Our
sympathy goes to Richie and his son Jimmy.
Jeep signs off, "Proud to be a Hellcat."
Bob Grebl [B] wound up '97 with a note to me for the HCN.
He can identify the picture on the bottom of page 13 of the Jan.
HCN. The T5 is Bob's old track driver, Walter Cunningham of
Deshler, OH. He died some years back - a good man. The other is
Pvt. Granville Kelly Martin [111] of Pea Vine Hollow, WV.
Bob had Christmas letters from many 66th people: McGill,
Heine, Lipstreuer, Mead, Hemme, Solberg, Zumwald, Hoe-
weler, Fitts, Brock, Perrett, Emery, Hegvik, Collins, O'Bryans,
Fran Nicholson, and Myrl Sabin. It's been a good year.
Bob sends a little humor, like the time when ASTP friend Tarola
and Bob thought they would make a few bucks bootlegging. They
invested $150.00 but didn't make any money because they drank up
the inventory.
Heine [C] wants to know if you want a program for the 66th
banquet in Houston, or if you want to just socialize. Let me know,
fellows.
Hopefully, one of you from Houston or nearby will help us
with the Hospitality Room. Let me know.
Tom and Shirley Perrett [C] had a surprise in Dec. He had a
car pull up in front of his condo with a 12th Armored plate on the
front bumper. An old army buddy, Ralph Beilstein [HQ], and his
wife Lucille, got out of the car and shook hands. They hadn't seen
each other in 50 years. Ralph read about Tom in the HCN and look
him up. Ralph bought a place in Naples, only a few miles away.
Tom received a letter from Mary L. Christen, wife of Robert
W., who was in Tom's squad in the 1st Platoon, C. His name is on
the wooden shoe Tom gave to the 12th museum. Christen's new
address is: Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Christen, 621 Amy Dr. #6,
Holmen, WI 54636.
Mary's letter: "Bob shakes too much to write so I have to do it.
He is getting along pretty good since he had a knee replacement, but
he didn't do his therapy as he should. He also had double hernia
surgery in Sept. We moved back to WI to be within five miles of
our children and had our first family Christmas in 18 years. We
miss FL, but we are adjusting to WI. Mary had two heart attacks
before the bypass and they aren't fun."
Bob Edwards [B] sends his regards. He saw the request in the
Dec. HCN for info about Darrell Best and Bob remembers him
very well. Darrell and Russell were Bob's scouts for his squad.
They were very good soldiers, both tobacco chewers and always
together like Bill Myers and Bill McCawn. Bob is having trouble
with his eyes and still going to the eye doctor and still seeing
double. "Sounds like some of the glasses I make." He hopes to see
all the 66th AIB in Texas. Darrell Best [B] died in 1958.
Leon E. Zitske [C] is 80 years old. He enjoys the Green Bay

Packers and life as much as possible. He has one son and one
daughter, two granddaughters and one grandson, all good kids.
Mr. Donald Dart [HQ] gave a program at Thiel College in
Dart's hometown in PA. One of the students said he was born in
Germany and his grandfather was probably shooting at Don while
Don was shooting at him. Don told him he was a citizen soldier,
wasn't mad at his grandfather. He just wanted to get the war over
and come home.
Don had to explain the "other battle of the bulge."
George Messer [C] said 19 attended the chapter Christmas party
and they had a great time.
Lloyd C. Moore [B] had pneumonia during Dec. He's feeling
better.
Your's truly is working full time at the VA hospital in Dublin -
busy, busy!
It's great to be a Hellcat.

Bernie Rice [C] has been sending me letters, pictures, etc., and
I have been derelict in my duties so I will try to do better and
include items he has sent me or called to my attention. In Nov. he
had written that Norma found a "short snorter" Bernie sent home
Nov. 9, 1944, for safe keeping. Norma should be thanked for
keeping it safely for all this time, Bernie.
Received a letter and a picture from John and Doris Strand [B].
They are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary on the 15th.
They sent a Xmas card with them in a picture with their latest piece
of transportation. They indicated the winter of 1997 was excep-
tional: 13 blizzards, 108 inches of snow, then in the spring there
was a 40-day flood. Fortunately, in the last item their house was
spared. They are grateful for all their bounty and expressed regret
and sympathy to all who have died.
Frank Leone [B] wrote with the sad info Marion died on Dec.
18 of a heart attack and he lost a sister five days before. From all of
us we wish to express our regrets and hope the new year will be
kinder.
Also received notice from Nick Lupo [C] that Richard Hendry
[B] had died. Nick did not have any more info. We knew that Dick
had been having a hard time and we send our heartfelt sympathy to
Grace.
Wendell Locke [C] continues to work on the 82nd gathering for
late June and I hope many will be able to make this next reunion.
We must be alert and thankful for the time remaining to us all. He
tells me the 45th Division Museum has a roomful of Bill Mauldin
cartoons. That should be interesting to see, and a real sentimental
journey for us all.
Opal Johnson (Ernest) [C] had sent a letter at Xmas time to
Bernie Rice. On June 1 she was in a car accident which totaled her
John and Doris Strand [B-82].
