Editor's Comments:
by John E. Critzas
April 26th stands out in my mind because not only is
it my date of birth, but 65 years ago it is the day that we
drove our tank through the walls of the prison at Landsberg.
not really knowing what we would find on the other side.
Those of you that experienced Landsberg and surrounding
camps remember quite well seeing the poor undernourished
'prisoners' and the thousands of bodies stacked up like
cordwood all over the place. We were "'buttoned up" but when
we realized that there seemed to be no immediate threat from
any Germans or weapons of any kind, but just thousands of
unarmed people, mostly Jewish but many other nationalities
as well, we opened our hatches and some people could speak
English so our first question of course was, "Where are the
Krauts?" They told us they were all gone and then started
begging for food and water. Not knowing any better, we gave
them some C-Rations and some K-Rations until our Medics
caught up with us to tell us to stop giving them food because
their systems cannot handle it and it could kill them.
When the news of the Camps got back to the High
Command, it didn't take long for Eisenhower, Patton,
Montgomery, Patch and many others to descend on
Landsberg. General Patton promptly told us, "You tankers
and infantry get the Hell out of here and keep chasing the
Germans....we don't want to give them a chance to stop and
set up more defenses. The rear echelon will take care of the
clean-up and everything else." So it was with our visit to
Landsberg where we experienced the near ultimate in cruelty
by Hitler's Nazi Regime. The War lasted only 13 or 14 more
days, but during that time it was very difficult for any of us
to take any prisoners having seen what they had done.
Those memories will be with me to my grave, and now if
you will allow me to switch gears to a more pleasant subject,
our 64th NATIONAL REUNION which will be held in
Indianapolis, IN. is just around the corner and you need to
send in your reservations NOW. Please remember that if
you sign up now and send in some money, the entire amount
will be refunded to you if for any reason you can't make
it. Barbara Campbell and her husband have worked very
hard to put together a most enjoyable experience for us at a
facility that is known the world over.. ..the INDIANAPOLIS
SPEEDWAY.
Here are the events and tours available to you in Indian-
apolis:
