Open Letter From
Bill Johnson
The enthusiasm among the
Units to win Bob Saehloff's BIMI
is really something to enjoy. There
seems to be that same competi-
tive spirit we had in the early
forties, even a little of that same
"name calling". However when
the chips were down our 12th
Arm'd had a togetherness that
knew no equal.
The only thing missing, is the
griping (Ed. Note: From some of
the letters I received the boys
aren't completely out of practice).
It is also interesting to note that
our Association is the largest of
all Armored Divisions in spite of
our being activated for only 3%
years.
As a past president, I want to
congradulate the unit reps for the
wonderful job their doing. A real
big hand to Bob Saehloff, 1 st vice-
president in charge of membership
and you as Editor-Secretary.
Long live to HELLCATS and
the ASSOCIATION.
Bill Johnson

EDITORS NOTE: With Bill's
letter, he mentioned Adam Beck-
adic (B/7I4) is very ill, and must
stay in bed for several months.
I'm sure a letter from his friends
will not only speed his recovery
but make that forced sack-time
go just a little bit faster. Write to:

The 56th Reports
My pride in the 56th has known
no bounds, at least I though so
until this last month. We where
only one member behind the 134th
on the January report, but since
then we have taken the lead.
Not only that, but I have been
receiving enthusiastic letters from
many of you that are planning on
attending the Detroit reunion. In
the past I never received these
letters until June and July. The
best part is there will be many
new faces.
In the mail bag was a nice note
from Jack Casner (Hq and B).
Jack promises to write a nice long
letter someday. Just send me those
short notes . . . often. Sue told
him to enclose a picture of their
aon, Rick. Now there is a hand-
some lad.
In a letter I mailed to Bill
Clifford (Hq) I did some bragging
495th Man Passes
Away Suddenly
It is with deep regret we
learned from Joe Mielnik
(495th Rep.) that a long time
friend and member, MYRL
TALIAFERRO (Hq.) had pass-
ed away suddenly. We extend
the Associations deepest sym-
pathies to Mrs. Taliaferro and
the children. The Taliaferros
reside at 4302 Overhill Drive,
Dallas, Texas 75205.
66th Man Killed In
Tractor Accident
Mrs. Allenwood wrote the
Hellcat News informing us, her
husband, Herbert (C Co.) was
killed in an accident a year ago
in Lincolnville, Maine. Surviv-
ing are his widow and six
children, ranging in ages from
4 to 31 years. Mrs. Allen-
wood would appreciate hearing
from any of his friends.

Wallace Larson
We where also informed that
Wallace Larson, B & C Co.,
134th Ord. Bn. had passed a-
way. He was not a member of
the Association and we regret
we have no further informat-
about our 56 th, to which Bill
answered; "Isn't it wonderful to
belong to such a fine organizat-
ion! We seem to get bigger each
year and each reunion gets
better."
Sure hope Ann Ribar is feeling
better and back to chasing John
around the house . . . Elmer
Bright, said he saw Col. Parsons
(714th) and he is the commander
of Camp Pickett, Va. . . . A1
Tirado, the Bill Renkens and Clyde
Calloglys are well and happy, but
nothing new . . . Don Turney is
planning for Detroit, and wants
to see the guys from "B" Co.
there in force.
Our 12th Arm'd Historian, Vic
Challen (B) was in Detroit in
January to assist in lining up the
reunion. "This will be the BIG
ONE," he wrote, "Sure would hate
to see anyone from the 56th miss
it."
John Reed has not only a new
address, P. O. Box 1454, Nogales,
Ariz. 85621 but added a Hellcat
Jr. to his family roster: Kent Lee
born last April.
Our dear friend, Mrs. Orlena
Blair sends her wishes and would
like to hear from any of the gang
from "A" Co. that knew her son,
Clyde Blair, (Lieut. K.I.A.)

493rd Reports
The time has rolled around
again for another report. Seems
as if all of my news is bad news.
I recently had a letter from
Paul Venie's aunt, Miss Winefred
Mezges, 3004 E. Division, Spring-
field, Mo. 65802. She said that
Paul was very ill in the V. A.
Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, St.
Louis, Mo. Now, I don't have to
tell you fellows that Paul would
like to hear from you, especially
at this time. You know how Paul
is devoted to this association and
to you. You see, Paul was never
married and he spoke of us as
being his family.
Rose Pisarski, has written a
note in her Christmas Greeting
that Julius passed away on Dec.
25, 1965. Her address is 20021
Lumpkin, Detroit Mich.
We did have a note from Tillie
and Owen Schumacher, saying
they took their second honeymoon
last Aug. and celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary by go-
ing to Niagara Falls. While they
were on the trip they visted with
Walter and Velma Liskow.
Had a note from Bob Saehloff
saying that our membership for
the 493rd was just 6 away from
last year. Let's do something
about that fellows. Say, how about
each one sponsoring a member.
Then we can double last years.
It won't cost you but three extra
bucks. You can send it to me
along with the name of the per-
son you wish to sponsor or send
it to Harold Hendricks, our sec-
retary.
Vernon H. Wates
493rd Unit Rep.
Edgefield, S. C.
The 17th AIB Reports
Who said we couldn't do it? Our
membership now stands at 87
which is 9 more than we had in
1966. And we still have time to
make it higher. My thanks to so
many of you 17th men that are
helping us reach new heights in
membership. I'm sure all of you
get the same thr.ll I do when I read
that "New Member" list each
month and see the names of
buddies I haven't heard from in
years.
John Preitauer (B) wrote he
had visited several times with Ray-
mond Ebbage over the years. Our
good captain wants any of the
boys visiting near Carmichael,
Calif, to be sure and look him up.
John will be bowling in a tourna-
ment in Denver March 18 and 19
If your near the Belmont Bowl why
not look him up.
Talked with Jim Lotz (Hq) on
the telephone. He was recovering
from the Flu bug and he wanted
me to know he would be in Det-
roit. It doesn't seem like only
four months to our next reunion.
Now is the time to circle Aug. 4,
5, and 6th on your calendar and
start making plans.
Herbert Walker (B) just start-
ing his busy season. He's a C.P.A.
in St. Paul, Minn. Another B
Company man, Milford H. Meyer
is all set for Detroit as is Chuck
Galli.
Lewis McNeill (Bn. Hq) is
learning to speak Spanish. He has
a foreign exchange student from
Argentina as a house guest. His
wife, the three boys and his
daughter are doing very well and
he got as far as "Si, Si". He is still
in the grocery business, but isn't
quite sure if he's running the
business or the business is runn-
ing him.
Before closing I'd like to wel-
come all the new members and
please, drop me a line about your-
self and what your doing.
'till next month,
John M. Finley
