I am writing this column on
Groundhog Day. According to all
the weather reports, many of you
have now had four weeks of
brutal winter weather. I don't
want to rub it in but today the
temperatures here are in the high
80's. We had "June in January"
and now are getting "July in
February."
We have a full mailbag this
month and I will probably have
trouble keeping the column inside
the official limits.
Dorrell Moore, A, called and
then wrote a note. He and Martha
were part of the group that went
on the European trip last July.
They each had two liters of beer
in the Munich Hofbrauhaus. Dor-
rell said the article in the Hell-
cat News in January covered the
trip very completely and accur-
ately. Dorrell sent a check for $25
to be used for the 493rd hospital-
ity room. You can be sure the
Moores will be there.
Wolfe R. Nichols (Sv) sent a
very welcome letter. He enclosed
a poem, "How To Know When
You're Getting Older." It's great
and I am getting some copies
made. If you'd like one drop me a
card. Also, it may appear in the
Hellcat News, depending on space
available, etc. Thanks, Nick.
Really great to hear from you
again. Nick was an usher at Peg's
and my wedding at Camp Camp-
bell in October, 1942.
Steve Tratnik (C) sent his dues
and a short note stating that he's
in good health.
Ken Warnes relayed a letter
from Mildred Swingood. She
reported being in contact with
Raymond J. Hoots (B). Ray drives
a bus for Greyhound and his wife,
Bea, works in a Winston-Salem
department store. She also men-
tioned an Abe Styers who was
once in the 12th.
Marion Davenport and Les
Miller both wrote to report the
death of Lester Mead. It was
already past the deadline for the
February Hellcat News but I
called Ken Warnes anyway. He
already had the obituary and said
it would be in the News. I think
all of us in A remember Mead. He
was in Miller's 5th section.
Vern Wates wrote a note and
enclosed a memorial obitary for
Wilbert Baker. Wil was in the B
mess section and will be remem-
bered by all the B battery guys.
Vern isn't sure about St. Louis.
They are expecting their daugh-
ter to present them with a new
grandchild about then, although I
can't imagine what good it would
do to have Vern at the scene.
Anyway, that's what he said.
The Wolcotts expected to com-
plete the sale of their house in
Perry, New York sometime in
January. By the time you read
this they should be in Chattanoo-
ga, Tennessee.
Frank and Nellie Czeiner were
in Florida in January but Nellie
wasn't feeling well and they had
to cut their vacation short. I had
expected to discuss details of the
hospitality room with Frank and
make a report in this column, but
we didn't see them after all. I'll be
writing to him and will relay his
ideas for the reunion.
Owen Schumacher received a
sackful of Christmas cards and
letters and sent a letter full of
news from B battery guys and a
few of his old friends in A. I am
sending his letter along with my
other stuff for this column, hoping
that Ken and the printer will
include it. Thanks very much,
Owen. If I had eleven more
friends like you I'd never have to
write a column myself.
I will share the latest work I
have had from the B Btry. guys,
and some of the rest.
Walt and Helen Hansen (Walt is
B Btry.) report they are fine. Only
problem is Walt celebrated his
60th birthday at Christmas. Paul
and Ruth Johnson (B) report that
their daughter & son-in-law &
family are stationed in Germany
for 3 years and they (Paul &
Ruth) are planning a trip in May
1982 to see them. Ken & Esther
Sundberg, my old boss and B
Btry. Supply Sgt. are doing as
well as can be expected. Ken has
a palpitating heart and doctors
don't seem to be able to get it
back in proper Rythm. He is at
Mesa, Ariz. Herb & Kay Arenz,
former 493rd Rep. say they were
to Germany last May and plan
another trip in spring 1982. Kay
says it is even possible, they may
make trip to St. Louis in 1982.
They also have daughter & son-in-
law stationed in Germany. Herb,
as you know is A Btry. Walt and
Velma Liskow (B) of Little Valley,
N.Y. report they have had consid-
erable sickness in 1981, which
prevented their attending
Rochester Reunion. They were
planning on having their family
together at Christmas this year,
the first time in 9Vz years. Boiling
Haxall and family seem to be
doing O.K. He was my old Exec.
Officer (B). Glen & Erma Oster-
haut, (B-Medic.) report they cele-
brated 50th Wedding Anniversary
11-2-81 and 128 relatives and
friends attended. Glen has been
some what impaired since a
stroke suffered a number of years
ago. He lives in Genesco, N.Y. My
old buddy, Virgil Jones (B) Hen-
derson, Ky. regretted missing
Rochester in 1981 but hopes to
make St. Louis in 1982. At the
time Christmas card was sent,

Marion Davenport (A) had a cold
but Hannah (wife) reported she
was much better, per her doctor,
on last visit in November. Hannah
says she must continue to take
heart pills daily. Walter John-
ston and wife (B) Roanoke, Va.
report in as hale and hearty,
except getting old. Had a phone
call Christmas Eve from George
Elless (A) Crawfordsville,
Indiana. Just wanted to wish us
Merry Christmas. George suffer-
ed a bad heart attack, a few years
ago, but seems to be doing O.K.
now. Also had a phone call from
my one legged friend of Ukiah,
Calif., Dorrell Moore and wife
Martha (A). They seem to be
doing O.K. and seem sure for St.
Louis.
Paul, I don't know if any of the
above will be helpful, you be the
judge. Tillie and I are fine. I am
semi-retired until April 1982,
when I will be totally. Weather
here has been horendous. 19
degrees below zero and wind chill
factor near 60 below, but we are
making out O.K.
Kindest regards
As ever,
O.P. Schumacher
Enjoyed your letter Owen but
sure would help with clean type-
writer letters and double spacing.
