Our group's No. 1 head-hun-
ter, Paul Hempfling, Sr., con-
tinues his fine work in seeking
out, finding and bringing into
the association more of his old
Division Trains buddies. This
month we are happy to report
that Paul has found three new
ones after reaching into the
states of Kentucky and Penn-
sylvania. They are Earl Blank-
enship, Joseph Jamack and
Donald Probert whose addresses
should be noted elsewhere. We
extend a hearty Hellcat wel-
come to the trio and once again
thank Paul for his good deeds.
Paul sends along a short note
advising us that he is still re-
ceiving a few replies to his trac-
ers and hopes to pick up a few
more.
Our first communication
comes from my old QM Section
sidekick, Ted Neighbors. From
Virden, 111., Ted sends his dues,
matching same with booster
and informs us that he reads
the HCN each month and looks
forward to receiving it. He men-
tions Carl Tielsch as a familiar
name and believes he was from
Chicago. He wonders if Jimmie
Reese still sings "Where or
When". (I forgot about that one.
I remember another one of his
favorites that he used to like to
harmonize while on the move
in the back of those 2V2 tons.
That was, "I Had A Dream,
Dear"). He continues . . . Jim-
mie was the only one who call-
ed me "Teddy". I was sorry to
hear about Ed Obey. He was a
true gentleman. He closes with
keep up the good work and
sends along his best wishes to
all.
I owe Ted an apology. A while
back, he sent me a note that
was mis-placed and just recent-
ly recovered. In it he stated that
it was a sad year as he lost both
his brother and, sister during
the year. Ted's late brother Paul
had a great talent. He was up
and coming having been the
leader of a band during the big-
band era of the late 30's and
early 40's. He was really start-
ing to make his mark but his
career was interupted when he
was drafted into the service.
The band toured and played for
dancing in the ball rooms of the
finer hotels in the nation's big
cities, and was usually heard
over the radio networks coast to
coast at the time. After the war
and starting from scratch, Paul
reorganized the band and made
appearances in New York City.
A caption under his photo in
the New York News read the
Singing and drumming maes-
tro Paul Neighbors and his
orchestra are playing at Rose-
land Dance City. A New Mirror
columnist, Nick Kenny, wrote .
. . Virden, Illinois' famous citi-
zen, Paul Neighbors, will con-
clude a successful four weeks
visit to the Statler Hotel with
one of the most entertaining
bands ever to hit the Big Town.
It is Paul's sparkling personal-
ity that makes it click. His
band is regarded as one of the
most popular dance outfits on
the West coast. The Shamrock
Hotel in Houston and the Roose-
velt in New Orleans are also
regular visiting spots. New
York's music men think Paul is
one of the nicest maestros to hit
the big burg in many a moon
and that he will be back. Paul
served in the army for nearly
four years and spent three years
overseas in Special Service with
the "Hey Rookie" show. We
extend our belated sympathies
to Ted and his family.
Don Seedborg (B/82 Med),
who has been a regular con-
tributor to the column recently,
sends an "R" rated picture post-
card from Nice on the French
Riviera. He writes . . . This the
life taking in all this Riviera
sunshine. I needed to get warm
again after being caught in a
snowstorm up north in Sweden.
The Frenchmen of the Rhin et
Danube are coming to our 1986
Long Beach Reunion. Hope you
and the rest of the 12th are now
members of this association.
(Don, while with the 2nd Armd.
Div. and waiting for a boat to
bring us home from our POE in
southern France, I was fortu-
nate enough to spend some time
in Nice. I never saw that seen-
