The HELLCAT NEWS
REPORT FROM
495TH AFA BN
UNIT REP
Hi Folks . . . Well another
month has gone by and anoth-
er member has joined the "See
You In Louisville" Club. Our
good friend Bob Saehloff from
Kingston, N.Y. Now's the time
to think and start planning for
the coming reunion . . . There
is nothing like welcoming in a
new member into the outfit —
This time it's none other than
Edwin Boring "C". This makes
10 from "C" Btry. We sure
could use a lot more addresses
from all the Btrys, running
kind of low. So with Fred in
and the Kemicks, Carrolls and
Dave Ross' renewals, it brings
the 495th to 90 members and
we are now 10 within the mag-
ic circle of 100 . . . We are
taking the Ivan Wipfs at their
word, "Someday Hope To
Write". We'll be waiting . . .
John Vincent says "hello" to
the whole gang. It was an un-
expected and most pleasant
surprise to hear from "good
"young John". Still in furniture
business after 18 years, mar-
ried to a fine girl (A Teacher)
for 13 years and very proud of
his little 2 year old lass, Mar-
garet Anne. John says she'll be
Miss Hellcat of 1979. Well she'll
join the others in the family
album. I think the 495th guys
married more teachers than
any other profession, exclud-
ing house wives. If your golf
is bad or fair, join us in Lou-
isville and bring the clubs a-
long. If your a good golfer
then just join us at the re-
union ... As long as my good
buddy Bob Saehloff is around,
I'll never have to worry about
getting news. Bob sure has
kept good tabs on the old army
days. It was 20 years in Feb.
that the 495th basketball team
composed of Lt. Croker as offi-
cer in charge and Deliantoni,
Burns, Wil 1 i a m s o n, Friend,
Wipf, Nazaretta, Di Domenico,
Bell, Gillon and Ostraat were
rounding out the first half of
the season in 2nd place, and
"A" Btry. continued ot roll a-
long in 1st place in bowling
competition with a team com-
posed of Perry, Mielnik, Kos-
tal, Degliantoni and De Mau-
ro. I'm starting a basketball
team to play these old men one
of these days. So far on my
team we have Ray Wipf, Har-
lan Anderson, Randy Ostraat,
Danny McMillen, and Mickey
Gordon. Any more of you
youngsters want to teach your
dad's a lesson, let's have your
names . . . Bea Ross writes
that Dave has been busier than
a bee with 2 stingers since he
opened his own business 2
years ago. Keep up the good
work, but take it a little easy
Dave . . . Bob also received a
card from Chuck McVey, who
planned to move to Alaska this
past January. We have never
had Chuck on the roster so
let's go to Alaska and pick-up
a new member. This would
really be something ... All is
well with Bob and Dorothy Lep-
ley. We sure have missed them
the last couple of reunions.
The same goes for Ken and
Virgie Compton . . . Congratu-
lations to Bob Saehloff on re-
cently being awarded Sports-
men of the Year trophy by the
Lake Katrine Rod and Gun
Club. It was quite an honor to
a fine gentleman and the pic-
ture and clipping will make
our album that m u c h more
interesting. Our sincere thanks
for all the fine news . . . The
John Carrolls' are all fine after
having the touch of flu. Their
little Irish Lass has entered
the 2nd grade and most im-
portant, she's a "Brownie". So
Maureen on your next trip to
Detroit bring some of those
goodi cookies, I'll take 5 boxes.
Jay just entered kindergarten
and it will be a couple of
years before he makes the Cub
Scouts . . . Had a call from
Dean Strubbe. He's going to
attend the 12th Arm'd. Div. re-
union of Illinois members in
Joliet on Feb. 15 and 16. Dean's
going to do a lot of recruiting
and promised to pass on some
more information about the re-
union in our next article. Bet-
ter stock up on some Bromo
and Alka Seltzer. Something I
skipped. Ed Petty will be in
Louisville and as far a s we
know, so will Ed "Hardrock"
Harden . . . Well Don and Dor-
othy Apell, the holidays are
over with, let's write . . . Good
news from George Kibler, he
wasn't feeling up to snuff but
all is well now. George sends
his regards and best of luck
to all the friends in the 495th
. . . Harold Anderson is busy
up in Minn., building a new
Motel by the Detroit Lake . . .
Lou Bacelli, guess we'll have
to leave the writing to you So
let's hear something about
yourself, Tom and the girls . .
. . Kathleen, the same goes for
you, tell us about yourself,
what Tom is doing and don't
forget young Tom and Mich-
ael. By Golly, the Toms' were
part of the gang and I know
all we have to do is to get them
started . . . We are also sitting
back and waiting to hear from
Dan Rinaldi . . . According to
Helen Clark, Norm will eventu-
ally join. So why don't some of
you "B" Btry boys give him a
little encouragement and drop
him a card or a few lines, be
glad to have him . . . Before
closing, might as well get back
to the same old story. Let's get
all the addresses we can and
send them in. And if possible,
get a buddy and stay with him,
till he joins. Use our battalion
book and the phone book for
references . . . Till next month,
Be Good, Take Care and God
Bless You All

87: — "That trip to the old
12th Armored Division scenes
as narrated by Elton Samuels
in last July's issue really
brought back memories as I
was in every one of those plac-
es mentioned. Have heard from
Vernon Wates and Paul Ven-
ie. I see John Fore has joined
the association. I often won-
dered what happened to him.
How about some news from
Texas, Mousy?"
REPORT FROM 23rd
TK BN UNIT REP
Just a line to report that our
friend Vern Thomas is coming
along pretty good. Received a
letter from Mrs. Thomas and
she reports that Vern went
under surgeiry and seems to
have come through with fly-
ing colors. However be is still
under treatment and it will
take some time before he'll toe
back to his fighting weight off
165 'libs, or so. The main thing
is to keep up his morale and
spirit to weather all he is go-
ing through. He would like to
hear from you fellows so let's
take a little time out to let a
fellow Hellcat know we are
with him all the way. Write
to Vern at 8825 Marmora Ave.
Morton Grove, (Eli. 60053.
I am trying to kill two birds
with one stone. I have been
sending out cards to all 23rd
members who have not paid
their dues as yet. I still have
a few more to send out. I
have also been sending out let-
ters to fellows in the Louisville
area and others who are not
members. I have even gotten
some answers. One of the Iboys
I heard from was Vdto De-
Fatotoi (C/23) Whose address
is 30i5 Lake St., Newark, N.J.
I hope the secretary will toe
hearing from hiim.
What with working on my
regular job, doing things around
the house and trying to do a
sincere job as unit rep I have
been kept pretty busy all win-
ter. However I am doing my
toest and am hoping that the
end result will be a bigger and
better representation of the 23-
rd in our association.

It is with deep regret that
we announce the passing of
Charles A. Williams (B/56)
whose address was 45 Church
St., Chatham, N.Y. This in-
formation was passed on to
us by Mrs. Williams. We
have no details as to exactly
when he passed away or the
cause of his death. Accord-
ing to our records Charles
had been an association
member since 1952.
