to hear from you, Cure, so you'd
better write!
Thank you, Mr. Morris, for
your most generous donation
to our marker fund.
A letter from Les Cramer
turned up in my files while I
preparing this column, one
which has gone unanswered
until now. Sorry about that,
Les. Some day I'm gonna hafta
get organized. Here's what
Cramer had to say: he heard
from his buddy, Kermit Edney,
who was kind enough to send
Les a copy of a weather book
he authored. Les says that, if
you're buttering him up to have
him make the trip to North
Carolina, he might surprise you
one of these days.
Les, after reading of Bingge-
li's visit to Otis Saunder's
house in Westerville, Ohio, has
promised himself that he will
be doing the same one of these
days, soon, since he lives not
too far away. I put it in writing
now, Les, so you had better fol-
low through!
Speaking of Binggeli, Les
remembers his association with
him when they were assigned
to the Division Signal Office.
Les drove the half track for Col.
King, while Cliff chauffeured a
Hq vehicle. You two ought to
get together. There must be a
gang of stories that are wait-
ing to be told.
Les' mail at Christmas in-
cluded greeting from his old
boss, Dick King.
Some other people Cramer
mentioned were Ben Nicholas,
Bill Cure, Batson, and Lou
Mattingly.
Thanks for your newsy let-
ter, ol'buddy.
I've rambled on long enough.
Just time enough to say.
"Be well and do well, my
friends."

41st Annual Reunion
GALT HOUSE
FOURTH and RIVER
LOUISVILLE, KY
Reunion Chairman Warren
E. Maue and Co-chairman Ed
Sheehan have given us the
good news of a special rate at
the Gait House for our upcom-
ing reunion August 26 - 29,
1987. The old portion of the
hotel will provide rooms for one
or two people at $58.00 per
night, plus the 9.2% tax, or
$63.34 per night, tax included.
$10.00 must be added to the
room rate for each additional
person over two.
The Gait House East is the
new portion of the hotel, and
these rooms are Executive
Suites, with living room and
kitchen area. They rent for
$88.00 per night for one or two
persons, and $98.00 per night
for three or four persons. With
the 9.2% tax, this would amount
to $96.10 per night for one or
two persons, and $107.02 per
night for three or four persons.
Please note that there is a
limit of four persons per room,
when filling out your hotel
reservation form. Also, that the
deadline for reservations is
July 26, 1987.
Those of you who attended
the last Louisville Reunion in
1979, know that the rooms in
the old portion of the hotel are
very nice and roomy, and very
suitable to your needs. The
newer portion of the hotel may
be suitable for those wishing to
entertain friends in their suite.
There is a walkway between
the old and new portions of the
hotel, so one can navigate be-
tween the two areas without
going outdoors.
The word coming in with
membership dues is that a large
number of Hellcats and Hell-
kittens intend to be in attend-
ance. Thus, it would be a good
idea to submit your hotel reser-
vation request promptly to
assure yourself proper lodging.

ETO. Charlie is a man of super-
latives. The 493rd Air Section
had the best pilots and observes
- naturally. The 493rd was the
most efficient artillery battalion
in Europe. When Charlie radio-
ed a sensing to a battery the
next round was right on target.
Due, no doubt, in great part to
the uncanny ability of the
observer to estimate distance
and direction from the point of
burst to target. As Charlie
claimed previously, it was not
unusual for him to sense "600
left, 600 short, fire battery" and
the volley was right on target.
We invited critique of such
artillery technique from you
experts, but as yet there has
been no response. How about
it, Bob and Carl, and you

At this stage of our lives the
majority of us have laid aside
our tools, brief cases, equipment
or whatever implements we
used to earn a livelihood and
have opted for that supposed
state of bliss known as retire-
ment. Many descriptions of
that era have been presented.
One that we received recently
and found especially interest-
ing and humorous is:
NO PHONE-NO ADDRESS
Now that I've retired from life's
competition
I find each day an exact
repetition.
I get up each morn and dust off
my wits,
Pick up the paper and read the
obits.
If my name is missing, I know
I'm not dead.
So I eat a big breakfast and go
back to bed.
NO MONEY-NO BUSINESS
Congratulations, Mel Far-
rand. Your visit to John W.
Fore was rewarding. J. W. is
now a member of the Hellcat
Association. We would appreci-
ate some news, J. W.
It was mentioned in the News
that Virginia Ward's doctor
advised her to gain some
weight. Ted wrote that she has
done so - all of 2 lbs. Ted also
told how surprised and pleased
they were when Mel and Marie
dropped in for a visit and an
evening of recollection and
fabrication. Time ran out and
Ted and Virginia intend to con-
tinue at Louisville. On Feb. 26,
President's Day, Ted celebrated
his 69th. There is much confu-
sion regarding whose birthday
we actually celebrate at this
time. We will settle for "Ted
Ward's Day."
At least our fly-boys are in
contact with each other. Now
Charlie DuPont would like to
get in touch with the air main-
tenance section who, he says,
were the greatest bunch in the
Specifically, Charlie mention-
ed Charles Larmore, Harold
Levison and Abraham Siegel
of the Air Maintenance Section.
None of these is a member and
we have no addresses. The
others of the Section pictured
on page 97 in our History are
Irwin Slitkin, Edward Kerr and
Jack Van Heuklon. The only
addresses we have of any of
these are those in the History.
If anyone has any information
about any of these men, Char-
lie is interested and so are we.
During our 5 months of com-
bat Charlie fired between 175
and 180 missions. His little
puddle-jumper was the target
of Messerschmidts, 88's, M.G.'s
and rifle fire and his L-4 suf-
fered a few scars but no fatal
wound. As Gus Schumann is
wont to say and as he repeated
numerous times at Long Beach,
"It's a good thing that we ran
out of war before we ran out of
luck." Amen, for all of us.
On his dues form Amidio
Passero penned a brief note to
Norb Bruemmer and wondered
how the unit rep managed to
gather enough material to pro-
duce a monthly column. It's not
easy, Pass. It requires a little
news from the membership, a
lot of imagination and, one
might add, a bit of exaggera-
tion and distoration. At times
we stray into another rep's ter-
ritory, as evidenced by mention
of Pass and one of his golf part-
ners, John Melfi of Div Hqs in
Cono Sideri's excellent column.
And Pass, if your fellow hacker
