HELLCAT NEWS
September 1989
opened the door. They had a
couple hours talk and asked
him if he had joined the associ-
ation yet and he said no. He
told him about all the things
he was missing by not being a
member and about the mini
and national reunions. I have
written to Joe about joining the
association, but have not heard
from him as yet.
Howie and Mary are not go-
ing to be able to attend the
reunion this year. I know every-
one will miss them.
The last report I have had
from our secretary Norbert
Bruemmer is that almost 600
have registered. The letter was
dated July 21.
Note from Margaret Leacy
(C) that she is bringing her son
David to the reunion and that
they will both be attending the
Friday evening dinner with the
56th. She also enclosed a nice
donation to the hospitality
room. She says that she is look-
ing forward to the reunion and
all the sights of San Antonio.
William Wesserling (A) says
that now that he don't go to
his shop on a regular basis he
would like to have his address
changed to his home. Also he
has been carried on the books
as having been in B Company,
which is not correct. He is now
carried under A Company on
the roster. He says that he and
Shirley are doing a lot more
together now that he has retir-
ed: boating, driving, shopping,
etc. They are active in church
work also. In Mid-August he
and his friends head north for
their Canadian fishing trip. He
usually starts checking out his
tackle and other gear about a
month earlier as there is no
corner stores up there. (Unit
Reps Note: I have seen many
pictures of the fish he catches
up there and you can bet they
are nice ones.)
Well, Vic and Wanda Challen
finally got home from their trip
o.ut west to TX and AZ and
said that they had a wonderful
time. They went looking for
Fred Payne and Warren Sallee
in Texas. They did find Fred in
Breckenridge, TX and he said
that Vic was the only fellow in
the company that he has ever
seen. They had a great chinfest
with him and his wife.
They then moved on to
Abilene but didn't have any
luck finding Warren or his par-
ents. Then they went out past
the old camp and it was a good
thing they had a sign up or
they would not have known
where it was. There are several
big buildings at the east end
that may have been mainten-
ance buildings. They then
moved on west to Tempe, AZ
where the temperature was 108
degrees at the time they were
there. The temperature was 118
degrees the week end before the
4th of July.
Vic and Wanda went to see

fell, all from B/56 and from the same squad. Marvel and

3 - the first time they had seen Clare since 1945.
the Grand Canyon and spent
two days looking around and
thought it is a big hole.
Vic says he called Wayne
White (A) in Phoenix and had
a nice chat with him and wife
Vera. He also called Clarence
Ewing for a long chat. Then
Clarence and his charming sis-
ter Faith took Wanda, Vic and
great grandson out for lunch,
and because it was very hot,
Clarence and he had a couple
cold ones to help them cool off.
Clarence will not be able to
attend the reunion this year.
Vic says that he is looking
forward to seeing a lot of fel-
lows and gals in Texas at the
reunion.
I received a note from Ric-
hard F. Oeding (92 Recon) that
said that he had the book that
Wayne Hempsted B/56 is look-
ing for and volunteered to bring
it to the reunion for Wayne to
copy. I'm sure that Wayne will
want to thank him for that.
Then the other day I received
a package from Mary Frances
Ross with copies already made
for me to forward on to Wayne
since I had not put his address
in my column. She went to a
lot of trouble and time getting
it ready for Wayne. I did for-
ward it on to Wayne.
Here is part of the letter Mary
Frances Ross (Hq) says in her
letter to me: She says that she
saw in the July issue of the
Hellcat News that Wayne was
asking about a little folder
"The Story of the 12th Armored
Division". She said that she
had that along with other
things of Joes, and was able to
get it copied and enlarged. She
also enclosed a copy of a Nazi
General giving up to the 12th
Armored Division.
Mary Frances says that she
has all the letters that she re-
ceived from Joe from the time
they were married (October 10,
1942) until he returned home
November 10, 1944 (282 in all).
Before the Louisville Conven-
tion she copied excerpts from
these letters mentioning Lou
Gangi, Cavanaugh, D'Angelo,
Shelton, Clubb and many
others. She took them to Lou
and he really enjoyed them. She
has just finished going through
these letters again and has
