show. The Smiths visited For-
rests mother (age 93) in New
Jersey for her birthday the 14th
of June. They then went to
Illinois for the grandson's grad-
uation, same is working a sum-
mer job at the paper mill where
Forrest worked and will attend
college this fall. Jeffery,
another grandson, won a gold
and silver at the special Olym-
pics in Chicago then participat-
ed in the state finals where he
came in 6th in the 50 yard
dash. Smitty is getting ready
for Charlotte, as is the commit-
tee. Charlie and Barb Com-
ingore (92) stopped by during a
tour of the area. Let's all go to
Charlotte, especially you guys
in North Carolina who have
never been to a reunion.
Got a note from Harold
Crowell (B) who wants to re-
mind all of B Company about
their mini-reunion at York, PA,
on Sept. 15-16-17, 1989 hosted
by Dan and Gladys Dietz. For
more info, call (717) 266-3805 or
write to Dan at 437 York St.,
Manchester, PA 17345. Crowell
is from Clay, KY, didn't say if
he was going to Texas.
We are already getting 1990
dues payments, some paying
with their reunion registra-
tions. This makes it nice for
Norb, every dues notice that
has to be sent out costs money,
so you can help your treasury
balance by paying early or on
time. Don't be a delinquent,
answer the call when it is put
in the paper or pay it early,
every little bit helps.
Two weeks ago I went to the
Veterans Administration Clinic
because of my "service connect-
ed ears" and did I get a sur-
prise. Not only did they treat
the ears, they gave me a com-
plete exam, for everything.
They determined that I had
Diabetes, and promptly put me
on a diet to control same. I can
stand the ban on my daily
lunch time beer, and an occa-
sional Martini before dinner,
but the straw that broke the
camels back was taking me off
Peanut Butter. Now everyone
knows that peanut butter has
brought every pre-teen through
early life, given to them by
their mothers when they would
not eat anything else, so it must
be healthy, so how could that
little skinny dietician dare to
deny me my peanut butter? All
of you have heard the saying
"Man cannot live on bread alone,
he must have peanut butter"
and I believe it. Even the Army
gave it to us in # 10 cans, and
many a bag lunch on the firing
range had nothing else in it
than good ole peanut butter and
jelly.
In the latest Hellcat News
there is an article about the
Brendan Phibbs book and the
death of Col. Meigs. Lloyd
DeLuca can find out the
straight of it if he is at San
Antonio because Virgil Thorp
will be at San Antonio. Virgil
was the Captain who was in
the tank turrent with Meigs,
and caught his falling body.
Captain Throp climbed up on
my tank to use the radio to
report Meigs a casualty, and of
course, was with us when we
removed the body from the tank
and put it on a litter on the
back deck of my tank. I deliver-
ed Meigs body to the air station
and I have never forgotten how
the wound looked immediately
after he was hit. My version
would differ somewhat from the
description given by Major
Phibbs, but also remember a
conversation I had later with
Captain Jenkins (Graves Regis-
tration officer, I think) whose

memory of the body somewhat
paralleled Major Phibbs ver-

ferences to DeLuca if he is in-
terested in those details.
Wayne Hempstead (56) men-
tioned a little paper folder
issued during the war about the
exploits of the 12th, and contain-
ing a photo of the sign at the
Danube River Bridge. The book-
let was probably "Speed is the
password" and contained about
33 pages. I have mine and will
bring it to San Antonio so Hemp-
stead can copy it if he so de-
sires. I am missing the back
cover on mine.
At the reunion the member-
ship will have to decide on who
they want for a Unit Representa-
tive, so if any are interested, or
know someone who may like to
serve, get their names before
the membership at the earliest
opportunity so that they may
be considered. As most of you
know, we vote on this at every
main reunion, and we want to
keep you happy, so make your
thoughts known. This is a way
to become more involved in the
organization at a low-key
position, and prepares one for
more involved types of particip-
ation. As long as the organiza-
tion exists, we will need people
to fill the various offices in the
HCN, Executive Council, and
Operational Office. Don't be
shy, jump in and get your feet
wet. While it (serving in office)
may cut into your socializing
and sightseeing during re-
unions, it is a very necessary
part of the continuing success

Hello Folks, What a swell
way to start a column. We wel-
come New Member John A.
Parker of B. Company into the
12th Armd. Div. Assn. John
made inquiries of Reunion
Chairman Maurice Glover re-
questing information about our
43rd reunion in San Antonio,
and bird dog Paul Hempfling
(Membership Chairman - that
is) picked up the scent and
followed up on it. We hope John
A. Parker will be able to join
all of the 43rd at San Antonio,
Texas. The reunions just seem
to get better and better. We
hope to see you John, and we'd
appreciate a bit of news about
yourself.

of the organization. We owe an
awful lot to those officers of
the past who have done so
much to keep this great body
together, and we will need
others in the future to continue
to promote our group.
SEE YOU ALL IN SAN
ANTONIO - ITS GREAT TO
BE A HELLCAT.
